Figure Four Weekly: WWE’s Women’s Division balancing act

Ahead of the company’s second-ever women’s Royal Rumble match and potentially the first women’s WrestleMania main event in history, a couple of segments have called the presentation of WWE’s women’s division into question.

WWE’s promise of change appears to include taking the on-screen product in a slightly more risqué direction. On back-to-back nights, that was evidenced by angles involving Alexa Bliss and Mandy Rose. A rather inexplicable segment on last Monday’s Raw saw someone playing a random stagehand walk into Bliss’ dressing room after she didn’t answer him when he knocked and said he was coming in. WWE focused on the exposed back of Bliss as she covered herself up. The segment didn’t fit in with the episode, didn’t do anything to advance Bliss’ character, and — aside from making a joke about Netflix’s “Bird Box” — was only there to have something semi-edgy on the show.
