Figure Four Weekly: WWE changes the name of Fabulous Moolah Battle Royal

For less than three days last week, the Fabulous Moolah Memorial Battle Royal was listed as part of the WrestleMania 34 lineup.
The match, which will feature wrestlers from Raw, SmackDown, and NXT as WWE attempts to get as much of the women’s division on the card as possible, will still be happening. But it will instead be called the “WrestleMania Women’s Battle Royal” after WWE had to change the name due to fan and sponsor backlash.
The battle royal was first announced via a video that aired on last week’s episode of Raw, and it appeared that WWE either had no idea the criticism was coming or thought it would be insignificant. The video was over the top in its praise of Moolah. It referred to her as “one of the greatest pioneers for women’s athletics,” a “trailblazer for women’s equality,” and portrayed her as someone who challenged gender norms and paved the way for women’s wrestling to grow into what it is today.
