The final live episodes of NXT and AEW Dynamite of 2019 were emblematic of where both shows stand as the Wednesday Night Wars enter the new year.

NXT closed out 2019 with two big title matches. In the main event of last Wednesday’s episode, Rhea Ripley defeated Shayna Baszler to win the NXT Women’s Championship. It was a title change that everyone knew was coming at some point. After Ripley pinned Baszler to get the win for her team in WarGames, the only question was whether or not NXT would do the title change on television or wait until TakeOver. Baszler had been champion for over a year, and WWE treated the end of her reign with the significance that it deserved. The babyface locker room poured into the ring as Ripley celebrated her win with her peers and fans.
