Three months removed from the crowd rejecting the main event of WrestleMania, the Universal Championship picture is still a bit of a mess.
It seemed like things were finally starting to fall into place with the announcement of a multi-man number one contender’s match for Extreme Rules. But, without all that much of a real explanation, the match was canceled the next week.
Despite all available evidence indicating that going in a different direction was necessary, it appears that Vince McMahon has doubled down. WWE is back to presenting Brock Lesnar as someone who doesn’t care about pro wrestling, again teasing that he’ll be going back to the UFC. They’re going with the storyline that negotiations for Lesnar’s next title defense fell through and that he refuses to come back until someone proves that they’re worthy, making it necessary to cancel the number one contender’s match.
