WWE SmackDown World Cup tournament winner to get IC title shot

The winner of the upcoming SmackDown World Cup will receive a future shot at the Intercontinental title.
During a commercial that aired during Monday’s Raw, it was stated that the winner of the upcoming SmackDown World Cup tournament would receive a future Intercontinental title shot against current champion Gunther.
The tournament was announced last Friday on SmackDown. Announcers explained that it will be an eight-person tournament, however participants have yet to be named. Fox Sports will be airing the World Cup soccer tournament this winter.
Gunther most recently defended the Intercontinental title on Friday’s show. He defeated Rey Mysterio, who became the number one contender after winning a fatal four-way number one contender’s match. Gunther has also recently defended the championship against Shinsuke Nakamura and Sheamus, with the latter unsuccessfully challenging Gunther twice.
Also announced for Friday is a Undisputed WWE Tag Team title match. The Usos, who retained their titles at Crown Jewel this past Saturday against The Brawling Brutes, will next defend against The New Day.
