AAA issues statement after being acquired by WWE: ‘The best is yet to come’

Lucha Libre AAA is ready to enter a new era after being acquired by WWE.

During WrestleMania weekend, WWE made the monumental announcement that it has acquired Lucha Libre AAA — one of the two leading promotions in Mexico. It remains to be seen how the acquisition will change AAA, but Paul “Triple H” Levesque said WWE is looking to keep AAA’s identity intact while helping the promotion grow.

Both WWE and AAA issued statements on Monday morning providing some more details on the deal. WWE wrote that the acquisition is “subject to the satisfaction of customary closing conditions” and is expected to be officially finalized in the third quarter of this year. WWE said the Pena family will continue to be involved in this next chapter of AAA.

AAA was founded in 1992 by Antonio Pena, who passed away in 2006. His sister Marisela Pena is the president of AAA and her son Dorian Roldan Pena is AAA’s general manager. They appeared at WrestleMania 41 for the announcement of this deal.

“AAA has been a family-operated promotion for over three decades and our trust could not be better placed than with one of the biggest sports entertainment businesses in the world,” Dorian Roldan said in WWE’s press release.

Marisela Pena and Dorian Roldan published their own Spanish-language statement from AAA. Calling this the most important step in the history of the promotion, they declared the best is yet to come. A rough translation can be seen below:

  • Lucha Libre AAA was born in 1992 as the dream of Antonio Pena—a man who dared to reinvent wrestling, to imagine the impossible, and to create a new way of telling stories in the ring. His vision changed the industry forever.
  • Today, more than 30 years later, his legacy lives on in every show, in every character, in every fan who cheers for our matches. That legacy was continued by Marisela Pema and Joaquin Roldan, and has been our guiding principle ever since: to make AAA a family, a tradition, and a platform of opportunity for Mexican talent.
  • In 2025, that same legacy drives us to take the most important step in our history. With excitement and deep respect for our roots, we announce a strategic alliance with WWE, the giant and global leader in wrestling, and Fillip, the Mexican company specializing in revitalizing iconic sports and entertainment properties. Together, they will propel Mexican wrestling regionally and globally, marking the beginning of a NEW ERA for AAA.
  • This alliance is not a farewell to what we are; it is a promise to bring our essence to new audiences, to strengthen our structure, to open more doors for our wrestlers, and to demonstrate that Mexican wrestling has a place on the global stage.
  • We will continue to be AAA: passionate, vibrant, Mexican. But now, with new allies, new resources, and a global vision.
  • Thank you to our fans, our talent, and everyone who has believed in this cause since day one.
  • The best is yet to come.
  • Forever, Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide.

For the deal, WWE has partnered with Fillip, which is a Mexican investment company whose goal is to enhance sports and entertainment properties.

“We look forward to partnering with WWE and TKO on this venture to secure the future of AAA for fans and to help take this business to the next level,” said Fillip co-founder and co-CEO Hugo Lopez-Velarde.

At the Kia Forum in Los Angeles on June 7, there will be a AAA vs. NXT Worlds Collide event. The show is taking place in the afternoon prior to the Intuit Dome hosting WWE Money in the Bank that night.
