UK stadium reportedly ‘front-runner’ to host WWE SummerSlam 2022

WWE is reportedly working on bringing SummerSlam to the United Kingdom next year.

TalkSport reported today that SummerSlam 2022 taking place in the UK is in the works, with Principality Stadium in Cardiff being the leading candidate to host the show. The event would mark the 30th anniversary of SummerSlam 1992 being held at Wembley Stadium in London.

TalkSport wrote that it’s believed that Principality Stadium’s retractable roof is an attractive feature for hosting the show. The report also states that nothing is final right now, and it’s possible that there will be a stadium show in the UK that isn’t SummerSlam:

Cardiff’s Principality Stadium is WWE’s front-runner to hold the event and they’ve been working on that venue for a number of months.

It’s believed the retractable roof is an attractive feature. The venue can hold 74,500 people, but Anthony Joshua fought in front of 78,000 when he battled Carlos Takam back in 2017, a layout more closely linked to wrestling.

Sources tell talkSPORT that although it’s WWE’s preferred venue, nothing is final right now. It’s even possible that WWE will hold a stadium show in the UK that isn’t SummerSlam.

Either way, plans for a WWE pay-per-view in the UK are looking ‘very positive’ after last week.

It’s understood that WWE held meetings regarding the plans last week during their UK tour and Drew McIntyre was even a part of them.

It was announced yesterday that Royal Rumble 2022 will take place at The Dome at America’s Center in St. Louis on Saturday, January 29. WrestleMania 38 and Money in the Bank 2022 will also be stadium shows. WrestleMania 38 is being held at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, while Money in the Bank will take place at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.
