Ricochet wins WWE SmackDown World Cup, Intercontinental title match set

Ricochet is the winner of the SmackDown World Cup, setting the stage for a future match against Intercontinental Champion Gunther.

Ricochet picked up the win on Friday’s SmackDown, pinning Santos Escobar in the finals after hitting a 630. Following the match, he posed with the trophy as pyro went off on the stage. Gunther came to the stage as the two stared one another down, with Micheal Cole announcing the match would take place on the December 16 edition of SmackDown.

Escobar had defeated Shinsuke Nakamura and Butch to advance to the finals. Ricochet had defeated Mustafa Ali and picked up a surprise win over Braun Strowman on last week’s SmackDown. Strowman was pinned following a distraction from Gunther and Imperium.

Strowman had made an appearance earlier on Friday’s show, sending Imperium members to the back during a Kofi Kingston/Gunther match.

Gunther previously had defeated Ricochet for the Intercontinental title in a match that took place on the June 10 edition of SmackDown.
