WWE SmackDown live results: Fallout from Money in the Bank

The Big Takeaway —

There will be another Women’s Money in the Bank ladder match next week on SmackDown in San Diego. After hearing from all parties throughout the show, Daniel Bryan decided to strip Carmella of the briefcase.

The feud between Randy Orton and Jinder Mahal is not over. Orton attacked Mahal and the Singh brothers and maybe also threatened to go to India to RKO Mahal’s entire family.

American Alpha returned as Chad Gable answered Kevin Owen’s U.S. Title open challenge. Owens defeated Gable and appears to be headed back in a feud with AJ Styles.

Maria and Mike Kanellis were not on the show.

Show Recap — 

Becky Lynch, Natalya, Charlotte and Tamina were waiting outside Daniel Bryan’s office. Bryan showed up and let them know he would hear what they have to say, but he wanted to hear from Carmella and James Ellsworth first. Bryan left and the four women kept arguing, except Lynch who just looked pissed.

Carmella and Ellsworth came out to the ring and Carmella was introduced as the first ever Miss Money in the Bank. Ellsworth introduced her again (and again) to some good heat. Carmella welcomed us to the fabulous era of Carmella and asked Ellsworth to hold the briefcase.

Carmella said she’s been trending because of how she won, because people claimed she disrespected a historic moment and she needed Ellsworth. Her response was “Who cares?” She was the last pick in the draft and wasn’t there for girl power. She kept hearing everyone talk about the other women but she outsmarted them and won the match fair and square.

She reminded us that Kane helped Seth Rollins win the contract and Bray Wyatt screwed Roman Reigns two years ago. She called all us Tweeters pathetic for complaining to Daniel Bryan. She said there were no rules in the match as the crowd chanted for Bryan. Carmella called the fans disrespectful and reminded us again that she’s Miss Money in the Bank. (Bryan won’t be out until later.)

Backstage, Charlotte showed up in Bryan’s office and said it doesn’t matter if the match was no DQ because that should only apply to the licensed competitors. Charlotte said they wanted to make history, and they did in an unfortunate way. Bryan would consider her words.

Jinder Mahal vs. Luke Harper was announced for later as well as Shinsuke Nakamura vs. Dolph Ziggler.

Big E (w/Kofi Kingston & Xavier Woods) defeated Jimmy Uso (w/Jey Uso)

New Day cut a promo before the match, where Kingston said the Usos staged a jailbreak out of their own penitentiary. They showed stills from the match at MITB where they had the match won and the Usos walked out. Kingston referred to Big E as Deput-E (deputy) who has a big stick and isn’t afraid to use it.

As Kingston slammed the apron for “New Day rocks” chants, Jimmy kicked him in the face. That allowed Big E to hit Jimmy with an STO. It seemed like the Usos were about to walk out again, but Kingston cut off Jey with a dive. They backed Jimmy into the ring where he was met with a Big Ending from Big E for the pinfall win.

Bryan was on the phone with Shane McMahon when he was interrupted by Natalya and Tamina. Natalya sucked up to Bryan and wished him a happy Father’s Day. Tamina cut them off and threatened to put her boot in Carmella’s mouth. (Tamina had a very noticeable bruise on her arm.) Bryan promised them he would have a decision soon. (Should also mention that Bryan asked Charlotte about her neck earlier and asked Natalya about her shoulder here.) 

John Cena returns in two weeks.

Dasha Fuentes asked Naomi her thoughts on Carmella and “the outcome.” She called it unfortunate that Ellsworth got involved, but she would be ready for whoever her next challenger was. Lana showed up and challenged her to a rematch. Naomi basically called her crazy but accepted the match for next week. Naomi threatened to smack her back to Russia.

Randy Orton sit-down interview with Tom Phillips

Orton said he lost control at MITB and saw red when the Singh Brothers put their hands on his father. Orton admitted this all might’ve been part of Mahal’s strategy, but Jinder crossed the line making it personal and will do whatever it takes to get his hands on him.

Orton said he would hurt Mahal and didn’t care if he ended his career. He threatened to snap the scrawny necks of the Singh brothers. Orton then said, “Since he’s disrespected my family, maybe I’ll disrespect his. I’ll travel to India and rain down RKOs on Jinder’s uncles, cousins, grandma, grandfather, best friends, the entire Mahal family. Jinder made a mistake, and now there’s no turning back.”

Shinsuke Nakamura defeated Dolph Ziggler

Nakamura got his full entrance and the pyro is gone. Lots of “Nakamura” chants early on but there was a small portion of the crowd chanting “Let’s go Ziggler” in response. Nakamura was in control for the first few minutes until Ziggler sent him into the post and hit a dropkick. Nakamura backdropped him over the top rope just in time for commercials.

They went back and forth after a break until Nakamura nailed him with a series of kicks. Nakamura hit knees and a suplex but Ziggler dodged a Kinshasa and hit a Fameasser for two. Ziggler tried a schoolboy but Nakamura caught him in a triangle choke. Nakamura then attempted an armbar but Ziggler thumbed him in the eye.

Ziggler countered a reverse Exploder into a Zig Zag but Nakamura kicked out. Ziggler immediately applied a sleeper but Nakamura battled out and nailed a kick to the head. Nakamura then killed him with a Kinshasa for the pinfall win. Good match that went 16-17 minutes.

Backstage, Bryan talked to Sami Zayn and put over his performance at MITB. Bryan gave him a match with Baron Corbin next week and Zayn was happy with that. Lynch showed up and Zayn put over her performance at MITB and said he was pulling for her. They wished each other the best and Zayn left.

Lynch talked to Bryan. She said the worst part was that she had the briefcase in her hand when Ellsworth toppled over the ladder. She said they call Smackdown the land of opportunity but it feels more like the land of handouts. It feels like no matter how hard she works, no matter how hard she trains and no matter how good she is, there’s always someone willing to cut in front of her by taking shortcuts. She asked Bryan what she could possibly do and Bryan said, “It’s complicated.” Lynch responded, “Is doing the right thing really that complicated?” Lynch was excellent here.

Kevin Owens came out for an open challenge. He said the only reason he didn’t win on Sunday was that the other guys conspired against him but he’s still standing here as your U.S. Champion. Owens wanted to make SmackDown the true land of opportunity and wanted to give someone from Dayton, Ohio a chance at his title.

AJ Styles came out to answer the challenge. Owens called him a rude American who wasn’t listening. The challenge was only for someone from Dayton. Chad Gable and Jason Jordan came out. Gable got in the ring, but Owens said he wasn’t from Dayton either. Gable said he just moved to Dayton. Owens asked him when he moved and Gable said, “This morning!” (Gable also gave Owens his new address, which was the address for the arena.)

U.S. Championship match: Kevin Owens defeated Chad Gable

AJ called for the match to start. The referee figured Owens was ok with this so he called for the bell Gable immediately hit rolling Germans. Gable applied an ankle lock but Owens quickly got to the ropes and escaped the ring. Commercial break.

Owens won with the pop-up powerbomb. Gable got a few more moments to shine, including using moonsault and a damn impressive roll-through German on the much larger man.

Zack Ryder and Mojo Rawley showed Bryan the footage from months ago where they became number one contenders for the tag titles. They wanted their title shot but Bryan said they need to beat the Usos first. (He can’t say the words “non-title match” but that’s what he meant.)

Sami Zayn and Tye Dillinger did a plug for a corporate sponsor.

Daniel Bryan addresses Money in the Bank

Bryan received a huge pop. He was glad to be back but wished it was under better circumstances. Bryan said he’s been discussing the matter with Shane and other officials for the past two days and they all told him he needs to stick to the rule book. He called out all competitors from the match and they all came down.

Bryan noted that there’s nothing in the rule book that says you can’t have someone else grab the briefcase for you. That being said, it’s never actually happened before and we’re in uncharted territory.

Ellsworth claimed Bryan’s gone soft since having a vegan, hippy baby. Bryan got in his face and told him to shut up. Bryan said if he ever talked about his daughter again, he would punch him so hard in the face that he wouldn’t be able to breath–then Bryan would fire him. Crowd was very excited for this.

The women started bickering when Charlotte said she was here for a decision and threatened to make Natalya look like Ellsworth. Tamina cut her off and used the same insult. How embarrassing. Perhaps she read the wrong part of the script.

Bryan said Carmella would be the first ever person to hand over the MITB briefcase because they were having a rematch next week on SmackDown. Bryan took the briefcase and left. A short brawl left Carmella alone in the ring with Charlotte and Lynch. Charlotte gave her Natural Selection and Lynch followed with a Disarmer.

Daniel Bryan returns to Talking Smack tonight with Renee Young. New Day, AJ Styles, Carmella and Ellsworth will be the guests.

Non-title match: Jinder Mahal (w/Singh Brothers) vs. Luke Harper 

This is your main event. Harper dropkicked Mahal out of the ring and they went to commercial less than a minute into the match. After the break, Harper went for a suicide dive but Mahal moved and Harper caught one of the Singh brothers instead. Mahal then booted him and applied a chinlock in the ring. The crowd chanted, “Let’s go Harper,” which is remarkable given how little he’s been used lately.

Harper made a comeback, hitting a slingshot senton and big boot for two. Harper followed with a swinging side slam for another two count. Harper went to the top but Mahal cut him off and hit a superplex (from the middle rope).

With both men down, Baron Corbin entered with his briefcase. He didn’t cash in. He circled the ring to let Mahal know he was in his head, then went right to the back.

The distraction allowed Harper to hit a superkick. However, Harper was distracted by one of the Singh brothers so Mahal caught him with a boot and camel clutch slam for the pinfall win.

Randy Orton came out afterwards. He took out the Singhs and attacked Mahal. Orton gave him a Thesz press, clothesline, backdrop onto the barricade and draping DDT on the floor. Orton got ready for an RKO but the Singhs attacked him. Mahal left so Orton handed out RKOs to both Singhs to end the show.
