The Big News: Former WWE Women’s Champion and TNA Knockouts Champion Mickie James returned and will challenge Asuka at NXT TakeOver: Toronto.

The Medium News: Kota Ibushi and TJ Perkins won their main event match and will advance to the second round of the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic.

The Little Beaver Sized News: DIY, Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa, also won their first round match and will now face their old rivals, The Revival, in the next round.

Tommaso Ciampa & Johnny Gargano defeated Tian Bing & HoHo Lun in a Dusty Classic tournament match

Bing is the first ever Chinese wrestler signed to WWE, while Lun took part in the Cruiserweight Classic. Bing and Lun worked well together and Gargano sold their offense really well. Ciampa tagged in and took over before Gargano pinned Lun with their combo superkick/knee strike.

Gargano and Ciampa will now face The Revival in the second round.

Kota Ibushi said that he is teaming with TJ Perkins out of respect. Perkins said he jumped at the opportunity to team with Ibushi after Hideo Itami was injured.

Samoa Joe was interviewed regarding whether or not he was about to attack Shinsuke Nakamura last week. Joe said he was never going to, he went out last week to test Nakamura. Nakamura is no longer a confident man. He is a man who looks over his back every time he goes out and he will go down in defeat to Joe.

Aliyah defeated Billie Kay (w/ Peyton Royce)

Kay attacked Aliyah at the bell and was in control the entire bout, never even leaving her feet until the finish. Liv Morgan ran out, causing Royce to try to roll into the ring to get away. Kay and Morgan played a tug of war with Royce, and as they were doing that, Aliyah rolled up Kay for the surprise win.

After the match we got a two-on-one beat down of Morgan until Aliyah decided to try to make the save — but she got beat down as well and the segment ended with the two Australian heels standing tall.

Tye Dillinger defeated Noah Potjes

Potjes has been on NXT before, but usually went without a last name. He apparently is creepy, but no one explained why. Actually, the announcers were too busy arguing over whether or not Tom Phillips was as creepy as Byron Saxton.

I am still not entirely convinced that the fans like Dillinger as much as they like chanting “10,” but he won quickly with the Tye Breaker.

After the match, Dillinger was on the ramp and cut a promo on Bobby Roode, saying the only glorious thing he has done is run. To prove this correct, Roode ran in and beat the crap out of Dillinger, including dropping him with the Implant DDT on the ramp.

TM-61 were asked about their second round match with Austin Aries and Roderick Strong. They said Aries and Strong were a great team “back then,” while they are a great and cohesive team right now. They think with one mind, fight with one fist, and are the team.

NXT Women’s Champion Asuka defeated Thea Trinidad

Trinidad is the former Rosita and used to be one-half of the TNA Knockout Tag Team Champions. The fans actually started a light “Rosita” chant but stopped it quickly when Asuka’s music hit.

Asuka is just playing with her opponents at this point and has stopped taking them seriously. She has been on the roster for a full year and no one has come close to beating her. Trinidad, despite her best efforts, didn’t come close either. Asuka turned an ankle lock into a German suplex into a Fujiwara armbar. While I was trying to figure out how she did that, Trinidad tapped out.

Before Asuka could celebrate, we were joined by Mr. William Regal. He announced that Asuka will defend her title against Mickie James at NXT TakeOver: Toronto.

James cut a promo on the video wall, saying that Asuka hasn’t beaten anybody until she beats her. The fans popped as James said it would be an international incident.

Paul Ellering gave The Authors of Pain a pep talk before he was interrupted to cut a promo. Ellering said that he had a vision when he came to NXT and now that vision is complete. He has a plan and a strategy, and the AOP will take out Rich Swann and No Way Jose.

Next week’s tournament matches:

  • The Authors of Pain vs. Rich Swann & No Way Jose
  • SAnitY vs. the winners of tonight’s main event

WWE Cruiserweight Champion TJ Perkins & Kota Ibushi defeated Lince Dorado & Mustafa Ali in a Dusty Classic tournament match

This is the final first round match in the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic. Perkins didn’t wear his title belt to the ring. Not sure if the fans knew he was replacing Itami, but they reacted quite positively to his appearance.

The heels got the heat on Perkins and they worked a really good tag team match, incorporating all of their spots into it as opposed to a collection of spots with no rhyme of reason. Ibushi got the hot tag and almost literally kicked the hell out of both men. Dorado slapped Ibushi, so he responded by hitting a double Pele kick to both heels at the same time.

Ibushi and Perkins used a combo moonsault/frog splash for a near fall. Perkins used the wrecking ball dropkick, but Dorado blocked the attempt at a kneebar. Ali tagged in, but quickly got caught in a kneebar for the submission!

That does it for the first round, but now Perkins and Ibushi must face SAnitY in the second round, which kicks off next week. What will happen? Can Perkins and Ibushi continue in their quest to the tournament finals? Only one way to find out and that’s to tune in next week. Until then, remember to say your vitamins and take your prayers!
