WWE Main Event results: R-Truth vs. Shelton Benjamin

This week’s WWE Main Event was taped at Rogers Place in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, before Monday’s Raw.

Mustafa Ali defeated Akira Tozawa (5:20)

This was a good match with both working really well together. The continuation of the storyline between Ali, Shelton Benjamin and Cedric Alexander is still the most interesting thing on Main Event in years.

Ali was given an inset promo where he explained that he had followed Benjamin’s lead last week and it hadn’t worked. He hoped that Benjamin was watching this week, because he was going to do things his way.

There were a couple of rest holds here, but they at least made sense because the finish was a submission. None of the holds being a rear chinlock was a welcome plus.

Tozawa was plucky, but Ali had enough to break out of his abdominal stretch and hit him with two big boots before the finish. Tozawa missed a top rope senton, allowing Ali to seize the opportunity and lock in a modified half crab to get the win.

R-Truth defeated Shelton Benjamin (8:21)

This was a really long match for what ended up being a distraction finish as Ali came out to argue with Benjamin before he was rolled up by Truth.

After rapping to the ring, Truth did his usual dedication to his childhood hero John Cena. This has to play out at some point when Cena next returns.

They shook hands at the bell and Benjamin got down to business as Truth was posted before the commercial break.

After the break, Benjamin was much more heelish, bullying Truth. He took his time and slowed the match right down. The crowd were not keen on Truth being treated like this.

Truth finally got some hope, cycling through the Cena finishing moves before Ali’s music hit. Benjamin and Ali argued on the outside before Benjamin dismissed him and rolled Truth back in the ring.

Truth snatched his chance and used an inside cradle on Benjamin for the win. Benjamin was mad and walked after a pleading Ali, looking intimidating and very unhappy. We’ll see where they go with this next week.

Final Thoughts:

This was fun. Main Event has become a place where they don’t just do storylines — they do show-long storylines!  After essentially years of this show just being there with absolutely zero attempt at continuity, who would have thunk it?
