WWE Main Event results: John Morrison vs. Apollo Crews

This week’s WWE Main Event was taped at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas, before Monday’s Raw.

Veer defeated Jaxson Ryker (5:34)

Veer got the win in what felt like a long five-minute match.

Veer is a solo act now that Jinder Mahal and Shanky have been drafted to SmackDown. It’s safe to say things aren’t looking good right now for the former Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher as they clearly have no idea what to do with him.

They did at least give him a win here, albeit against another performer who they have no idea what to do with. Ryker has the size, but lacks the mobility and agility to go with it. Since breaking from Elias, he’s been rudderless even with his recent long winning streak.

Ryker got some crowd reaction, especially after he landed a running a running knee and a crossbody for a near fall. He missed a diving headbutt to give Veer the opening to hit two consecutive running splashes before finishing him with The Million Dollar Arm. Ryker has now lost two straight while Veer is looking to start his own streak with the victory, his first since July.

Ryker needs to stop using the diving headbutt. If history has taught us anything, it’s that this is not a move that you want to be using in your repertoire for very long.

Apollo Crews (w/ Commander Azeez) defeated John Morrison (7:16)

This was another match that probably went longer than it needed to, but was fine. 

The last time Crews was on Main Event was back in 2019. Despite a rebrand, Crews’ use on the main roster feels too sporadic. His last outing on this show was against EC3, a free agent whose destination will be interesting to follow come this December.

Morrison must be waiting on Miz’s departure from Dancing with the Stars with keen interest, because he was once again the man to do the business here. He has only won three matches in the last five months.

The reason for this dragging was that they went through a commercial break and then proceeded to do a long rest hold spot. For two workers like these, that feels like a total waste.

Azeez was the difference maker in the end. Morrison went up for Starship Pain, but got his foot pulled by the Commander that sent him crashing to the mat. This allowed Crews to hoist Morrison up onto his shoulders for the Angel Slam and the win.

Final Thoughts:

Selfishly, it’s been nice since the draft to have fresh faces each week because at its worst, Main Event features a small pool of talent trading wins and losses. But, it still remains a show with an identity crisis: no women featured once again and, other than Veer, no real up-and-comers, it’s hard to know what this show is really for.
