WWE Main Event results: Garza vs. Ricochet, Carrillo vs. Gulak

The Big Takeaways:

Humberto Carrillo and Drew Gulak had a very mat-based bout that saw Carrillo take the victory before Angel Garza stole a win against Ricochet in a very solid match.

Show Recap:

Humberto Carrillo defeated Drew Gulak (6:00)

Well, this was certainly one for the purists.

Gulak and Carrillo essentially had a mat battle for six minutes — par for the course if you’re Gulak, but Carrillo, to his credit, really held his own here.

Gulak took most of the actio, tying Carrillo up, working over different joints, and applying a series of submission holds. Live, this would probably have gone one of two ways, but with the piped in sound, it told a good story.

At one point, Tom Phillips laughably suggested on commentary that the match reminded him of some of Samoa Joe’s contests over the years. Joe, who is extremely good as a color commentator these days, no sold it, sidestepped the comment, and carried on as normal.

Carrillo came out the unlikely winner after he was able to get to the ropes to break a hold and create some separation. He nailed Gulak with some kicks and left him prone with a spinning kick to the face. A picture perfect top rope moonsault got this done for Carrillo who grabbed his second win of 2021.

It will be interesting to see whether Gulak appears on Main Event again anytime soon after it seemed that he is now aligned with Sheamus following Raw last Monday.

Angel Garza defeated Ricochet (7:41)

Garza plays a great heel. He was full of swagger and style here and tried to cheat any chance he got. He nailed Ricochet when his back was turned at the bell and got the win by using the ropes.

This was actually a pretty good match in the end. Ricochet took the opening half until the commercial break and then afterward, they did a typical WWE back and forth with each man kicking out of each other’s finishers.

But the two of them really connected well with little wasted movement and excellent timing. They did a combination at the end where they went through three near falls and about three different reversals in quick succession with a real grace about it.

In the end, Garza rolled Ricochet up using the bottom ropes to give him leverage for the win. Hopefully they do it again next week because this was one of the better matches on this show in a long time.

Final Thoughts:

These were two good matches this week, but Garza and Ricochet continue to be cruelly underutilized by this company on their two main TV shows.
