WWE Main Event results: Carmelo Hayes, Von Wagner in action

This week’s WWE Main Event was taped at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, before Monday’s Raw.

Carmelo Hayes defeated Cedric Alexander (10:34)

This was a really long match by Main Event standards, going through a commercial break. It was good to see them putting Hayes over as well.

They did an inset promo that allowed Alexander to explain where he has been for the last few weeks. He was a big part of the Shelton Benjamin and Mustafa Ali storyline, but then just disappeared without any indication as to why. Here, he said he was getting his head together.

They went back and forth with Hayes looking good in his first televised main roster match against Alexander here, having only ever worked a dark match at a SmackDown taping in 2021.

There was some neat stuff here, especially after the break. Hayes worked over Alexander’s left arm before they went to trading near falls. Hayes took a Neutraliser and still survived, so they were trying to put him over strong here.

In the end, Hayes used a version of Jericho’s Codebreaker to leave Alexander prone. He went up to the top rope and Alexander barely got to his feet which allowed Hayes to nail him with a leg lariat to the back of the head that he calls the Nothing But Net.

R-Truth (w/ Shelton Benjamin) defeated Von Wagner by DQ (3:37)

There wasn’t much to this one and it didn’t do much to promote Wagner either.

They essentially had a very brief match with Wagner dominating until he went to take the turnbuckle pad off the top rope while the ref checked on Truth.

Wagner has appeared against Truth on this show before, but it was during the Performance Center show era when he was still working under the name Cal Bloom.

As the ref fixed the turnbuckle, Benjamin slid Truth a chair who, instead of using it, did the Eddie Guerrero finish, throwing the chair at Wagner to catch before feigning that he had been hit on the mat.

The ref turned around, put two and two together, and called immediately for the bell. Truth made off with Benjamin like a bandit and Wagner looked seriously mad.

Final Thoughts:

This was a good show, but the match order was the wrong way around. Finishing with the Carmelo Hayes win would have made way more sense with the goofier and short match logically going first. But, all told, Main Event has been a better show since Vince McMahon has left.
