WWE Main Event results: Apollo Crews vs. Akira Tozawa, T-Bar vs. Reggie

This week’s WWE Main Event was taped at the XL Center in Hartford, Connecticut, before Monday’s Raw.

T-Bar defeated Reggie (2:51)

This was just a squash and not a particularly special one at that.

T-Bar has been on this show so frequently over the last six months and only has a handful of wins to his name. Thus, a squash here against the debuting Reggie was good for him, but also kind of made no sense.

If booked like a big man who a presents a real threat, T-Bar excels. When they try to make him look fallible or have him go to-to-toe with minnows, it doesn’t really work. Needless to say, he needs a push in the right direction.

Reggie tried to get a little bit of offense in here. A dropkick and spinning kick were about all he was given though. After essentially trying to avoid T-Bar’s strength, they went to the finish.

This ended with T-Bar using a big boot and High Justice and that was all she wrote.

Apollo Crews (w/ Commander Azeez) defeated Akira Tozawa (6:06)

Their first-ever meeting produced a pretty meager encounter, but did gave Crews a much-needed win.

Tozawa, it’s fair to say, is really very good and does an excellent job in this role, But, he does not win wrestling matches as a general rule. In fact, he’s only won 10 in the last two calendar years.

He and Crews started fast, but then slowed down to a dull pace with Crews just beating Tozawa down. The weird thing is that he still used Azeez for help when he really didn’t need it, and could have just finished this in about two minutes.

Azeez messed around outside, taking Kevin Patrick’s chair and putting his feet up at one point. He distracted Tozawa so that he was crotched on the top turnbuckle and nailed him with a fist when he was hung over the middle rope.

All that said, the finish was neat. With Tozawa having used an Octopus to wear Crews down, he went up top but got caught mid-air by Crews who turned it quickly into the Samoan Drop for the win.

This was only Crews’ second solo win of this year.

Final Thoughts:

There’s nothing wrong with a squash, but when it just comes out of nowhere for a character who has struggled to win anything of late, it is less welcome. The end of the Crews vs. Tozawa match was nice, but it went longer than it needed to. 

As always, this show needs freshening up and potentially a complete rethink while they’re at it.
