NXT TakeOver New York live results: Five title matches

WWE’s first major event of WrestleMania week takes place tonight as the Barclays Center hosts NXT TakeOver: New York.

Five titles will be on the line on tonight’s show. There is guaranteed to be at least one new champion, with Johnny Gargano and Adam Cole facing off in a two-out-of-three falls match for the vacant NXT Championship.

Tommaso Ciampa vs. Gargano was originally set to headline the show, but Ciampa had to vacate the NXT title due to his neck injury.

NXT Women’s Champion Shayna Baszler has three challengers tonight. She’ll defend her title against Bianca Belair, Io Shirai, and Kairi Sane in a fatal four-way match.

There will be a WWE United Kingdom Championship match on the show as Pete Dunne defends against WALTER, Velveteen Dream will put his North American title up for grabs against Matt Riddle, and Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic winners Ricochet & Aleister Black challenge for War Raiders’ NXT Tag Team titles.

TakeOver begins on the WWE Network at 7 p.m. Eastern time tonight. Charly Caruso, Pat McAfee, and Sam Roberts will host the pre-show starting at 6 p.m. Eastern.

NXT Tag Team Champions War Raiders defeated Aleister Black & Ricochet to retain the titles

This was a really good match with a hot crowd. The crowd was pretty hot all night. The fans love both teams and popped for their entrance. Black and Rowe went back and forth with some chain wrestling. Rowe had the chance to punch Black but pulled back. Black then pulled back with a kick.

Ricochet and Hanson had a hot exchange. Hanson blocked everything Ricochet tried. They sent the War Raiders to the floor and Black teased a dive. Instead, Black and Ricochet did Black’s cross-legged pose. The War Raiders isolated Black on their side of the ring. Rowe attempted to slam Hanson onto Black but Black kicked out the legs.

Ricochet got the tag and ran wild. He hit a standing shooting star press for a near fall on Rowe. Black and Ricochet isolated Rowe on their side of the ring. At one point, the crowd was briefly distracted with something going on.

Hanson hit a series of running splashes on Ricochet and Black in separate corners across the ring. Hanson charged at Ricochet but he caught Hanson and gave him a fallaway slam. Rowe and Black exchanged hard knees and kicks in the middle of the ring. Black hit a German suplex on Rowe for a close near fall. This exchange was incredible.

Hanson avoided Ricochet with a cartwheel. In an awesome spot, Ricochet attempted a handspring elbow but Hanson avoided and hit his own for a two count. Rowe held up Ricochet and Hanson nailed him with a springboard clothesline. They both pinned Ricochet but Black broke up the move with a double stomp.

Black hit a moonsault to the floor on Hanson. Rowe followed up with a suicide dive on Black. Ricochet then hit a space tiger drop to the floor. Hanson then hit a senton off the top turnbuckle to the floor. They teased a double count-out but Rowe and Ricochet made it back in.

Black hit Rowe with Black Mass and Ricochet hit the shooting star press for a near fall. Ricochet attempted the 630 but missed. The War Raiders hit Thor’s Hammer. Hanson hit a suicide dive taking out Black. War Raiders then hit Fall Out on Ricochet for the win in a really good match.

After the match, medical staff, Black and the referee checked on Ricochet. Both teams hugged after the match as well. War Raiders put the belts down and bowed to Ricochet and Black. The War Raiders left.

Black and Ricochet stood in the ring. The fans gave them a standing ovation and chanted “NXT”. Ricochet was visibly emotional. They hugged and bowed to the fans. The fans erupted in a huge “You Deserve It” chant. This was an awesome moment.

Piper Niven and Toni Storm were shown sitting in the crowd.

NXT North American Champion The Velveteen Dream defeated Matt Riddle to retain the title

This was another really good match. Dream got a grand entrance and was carried to the ring. He got a huge reaction. There were loud “Bro” and “Velveteen” chants.

Dream stomped on Riddle’s barefoot to take over. Dream sent Riddle to the floor and dove off the top turnbuckle. Riddle caught him and hit a German suplex. Riddle missed a standing moonsault but hit a senton. He followed up with a knee for a near fall.

Dream fought back with a German suplex but Riddle rolled through and landed on his feet. Riddle rocked Dream with a knee and hit a suplex for a two count. Riddle lost his cool and the fans booed him. Dream attempted a sleeper but Riddle fought out. Riddle got an armbar but Dream fought out. Riddle rocked Dream with another knee and hit a German suplex for a near fall.

Riddle hit Dream with kicks but Dream Hulked up. He nailed Riddle with a big boot and running knee. Dream sent Riddle to the floor and nailed him with a double ax handle. Riddle locked on the Ankle lock but Dream fought out.

Dream hit the Dream Valley Driver. He attempted the Purple Rain elbow drop but Riddle locked on the Bromission. In a crazy spot, Dream was standing on the apron when Riddle jumped to the second rope. Riddle then gave Dream a huge German Suplex into the ring. Riddle hit the Floating Bro for a very close near fall. He hit a powerbomb into a knee for a two count.

Riddle locked on the Bromission but Dream rolled through and pinned Riddle to retain the title. After the match, Riddle watched Dream celebrate. They then bumped fists for a huge pop.

Earlier today, Kushida signed his contract with William Regal and Triple H. He was shown sitting in the crowd and got a huge pop from the fans.

WALTER defeated Pete Dunne to win the WWE United Kingdom Championship

This was a great match, brutal with hard-hitting action. The fans reacted big for both guys and sang WALTER’s theme. The fans popped big for Dunne and broke into a big “Bruiserweight’ chant.

They started out slow trading submissions. WALTER backed Dunne in the corner and missed a chop attempt. Dunne caught WALTER with a forearm. WALTER responded with two vicious chops that knocked Dunne down.

Dunne nailed WALTER with a clothesline but he didn’t go down. WALTER avoided Dunne with a leapfrog and hit a big boot. He placed Dunne on the top turnbuckle and stood on his head. WALTER then gave Dunne a back suplex on the apron. Dunne applied a heel hook but WALTER broke free with chops.

Dunne ran up the turnbuckle into a black flip and landed on his feet. WALTER attempted a German suplex but Dunne landed on his feet again and nailed WALTER with a kick. Dunne then hit a moonsault to the floor.

WALTER attempted a superplex but Dunne attacked the fingers again. Dunne then hit a huge running sit out powerbomb for a close near fall. WALTER rolled to the floor. Dunne then hit a double foot stomp from the top to the floor.

WALTER stomped on Dunne’s head and attempted a powerbomb. Dunne landed on his feet and hit an enziguri. Dunne went up for a moonsault but WALTER stopped him. He attempted a German suplex but Dunne fought out. WALTER went for a sleeper but Dunne smashed his fingers on the ring post. WALTER fought back and hit the sleeper suplex off the top for a near fall.

WALTER attempted a splash off the top but Dunne locked on the triangle. WALTER broke free and stomped on Dunne. Dunne went for the Bitter End but WALTER landed on his feet and hit a huge clothesline for near fall. Dunne fought back and hit the Bitter End but WALTER kicked out. 

They met in the middle of the ring and traded hard shots. Dunne backed WALTER into the ropes and unleashed punches. The referee pulled Dunne back and WALTER rocked him with a big boot.

WALTER climbed to the top but Dunne stopped him. Dunne locked on the triangle on the top turnbuckle. In a crazy spot, WALTER gave Dunne a powerbomb off the top. WALTER then hit a splash off the top to win the U.K. championship.

Dunne’s 685-day reign as champion comes to an end.

Edge and Beth Phoenix were shown sitting at ringside. 

NXT Women’s Champion Shayna Baszler defeated Bianca Belair, Io Shirai, and Kairi Sane in a fatal four-way to retain the title

Jessamyn Duke and Marina Shafir walked with Baszler in the back.

This was a really good match with lots of fast-paced action. Belair and Baszler cleared the ring and squared off. Belair had the early advantage. She attempted a pin but Shirai hit double knees into a near fall. Baszler had a pin but Sane hit a neckbreaker. Sane and Shirai worked together against Belair and Baszler. They rocked Baszler with a double dropkick.

Shirai and Sane cleared the ring and squared off. Sane attempted a head scissors but Shirai landed on her feet. Baszler grabbed Belair by the hair and threw her into the corner. Baszler stomped on her elbow. In a cool spot, Baszler tried to pull Belair into the ring post using her hair but Belair blocked it. She then pulled Baszler into the ring post.

Sane hit a sliding dropkick to Baszler and Shirai hit a springboard dropkick on Belair. Belair caught Shirai and hit a fallaway slam. Sane and Shirai gave Baszler a double powerbomb who gave Belair a superplex at the same time.

Baszler and Belair were sent to the floor. Shirai then launched Sane over the top rope onto Baszler and Belair. Shirai followed up with a moonsault. Sane and Shirai worked together against Belair. Belair fought back and gave Shirai a military press slam to the floor on Baszler and Sane.

Belair went for the double under hook chicken wing but Baszler locked on the Kirifuda Clutch. Belair fought up to her feet and broke free. She hit the KOD but Shirai broke up the pin. Shirai ran wild and hit a moonsault on Baszler but Sane broke up the pin. Shirai was shocked that Sane broke up the pin. Sane gave Shirai the Alabama slam on Baszler. Sane hit the Insane Elbow on Baszler but Shirai broke up the pin attempt.

Shirai went for a slam but Sane countered into a sick looking DDT. Sane went up top but Belair whipped her with her hair. In a crazy spot, Belair hit a double KOD on both Shirai and Sane at the same time. Baszler rocked Belair with a knee and locked on the Kirifuda Clutch for the submission win.

Johnny Gargano defeated Adam Cole to win the vacant NXT Championship in a 2 out of 3 falls match

This was an awesome match. The fans gave Gargano a mixed reaction at first. They popped big for Adam Cole and broke into a huge “Adam Cole” chant. The fans then broke into dual “Johnny Wrestling” and “Adam Cole” chants.

They started off with some mat wrestling. Cole locked on a side headlock and slowed the pace down. They traded pin attempts but Gargano took over with an arm drag. Cole dropped down but Gargano went for the Gargano Stretch.

Gargano sent Cole to the floor. Cole avoided a knee but got caught with a dropkick. Cole applied a chin lock and slowed the pace down. Cole and Gargano both attempted a cross body and collided in mid-air.

Gargano landed on the apron and nailed Cole with a spear. Gargano avoided a superkick and hit a flatliner for a two count. Cole regained control with a backstabber. Gargano scored a near fall with an inside cradle.

They both went for a superkick but stopped. Gargano super kicked the knee instead. Gargano went for a sunset flip but Cole rolled through at hit the Last Shot to win the first fall. 

Cole was firmly in control and hit the Last Shot again but Gargano kicked out. Gargano fought back and hit a spear on the apron. Cole teased a powerbomb off the top but Gargano hit the Air Raid Crash for a two count. Gargano hit a slingshot DDT on the apron.

Gargano had the match won by count out by broke the count. Cole took back over and sent Gargano into the ring post. They traded submission attempts. Gargano locked on the Gargano Stretch to win the second fall. 

They traded hard shots in the middle of the ring. Gargano hit a hard clothesline for a close near fall. Gargano is bleeding above his eye. Gargano sent Cole head first into the second turnbuckle.

They hit clotheslines at the same time and then hit each other with superkicks. Cole rocked Gargano with a superkick to the back of the head and hit a straight jacket German suplex for a two count. Gargano hit a reverse hurricanrana and a superkick but Cole rolled out of the ring.

Cole pulled Gargano to the floor and gave him a wheelbarrow German suplex into the apron. Gargano fought back with a draping DDT. Gargano attempted the slingshot spear but Cole hit a superkick. He followed up with the Canadian Destroyer for a very close near fall.

Cole called Gargano a failure. Gargano snapped. They fought on the floor and Gargano sent Cole over the Spanish announce table. Cole fought back and gave Gargano the Fairy Tale ending on the announce table. Gargano just barely beat the count. Cole rocked Gargano with a superkick for a very close two count.

They traded superkicks. Cole went for the Canadian Destroyer but Gargano countered into the Gargano Stretch. Roderick Strong ran out and distracted the referee. Gargano got the Gargano stretch back on and Cole tapped but the referee didn’t see. Kyle O’Reilly jumped in the ring and raked Gargano’s eyes. Cole pushed Gargano into the referee.

O’Reilly and Bobby Fish hit their finisher but Gargano kicked out. He backdropped Cole onto all three at ringside. Gargano fought off The Undisputed Era at ringside.

Cole hit a superkick, a superkick to the back of the head and the Last Shot but Gargano kicked out again. This got a huge reaction from the fans. Cole missed the Last Shot and Gargano locked on the Gargano Stretch for the submission win in an incredible match. The fans popped huge for Gargano’s win. Gargano is the new NXT Champion, which also makes him the first ever NXT Triple Crown winner.

Candace LeRae came out to celebrate with Gargano. The fans gave Gargano a huge reaction after the match. He went into the crowd and celebrated with his family as well. When Gargano and LeRae reached the ramp Tommaso Ciampa came out. He hugged both as the show went off the air.
