New WWE Tag Team Champions crowned on SmackDown

DIY’s Johnny Gargano & Tommaso Ciampa are the new WWE Tag Team Champions.

DIY defeated A-Town Down Under’s Grayson Waller & Austin Theory on Friday’s WWE SmackDown in Toronto to win the Tag Team titles in the show’s televised main event.

The title win is the first on WWE’s main roster for the Gargano & Ciampa duo.

DIY commented on their win in a WWE digital media promo:

WWE’s chief content officer Paul “Triple H” Levesque noted in a social media post that DIY’s Tag title victory came in the same building where the duo captured NXT Tag Team gold against The Revival (FTR) at NXT TakeOver: Toronto in 2016:

Ciampa also held the NXT Championship on two occasions. Gargano is a former three-time NXT North American Champion, and also held the NXT Championship on one occasion.

Waller & Theory had held the Tag titles since WrestleMania 40, where they captured the gold in a ladder match where both sets of Tag titles that had made up the Undisputed Tag Team Championship were on the line.

A-Town Down Under won the SmackDown Tag titles in that bout, while The Miz & R-Truth won the Raw Tag titles. The belts were later renamed the WWE Tag Team titles and the World Tag Team titles.
