New women’s & tag title belts introduced on WWE SmackDown

As was expected after Daniel Bryan announced earlier on Tuesday that SmackDown would be adding two new championships, the brand debuted new women’s and tag team titles on tonight’s show.

Bryan and Shane McMahon unveiled the new titles with the brand’s women’s and tag team divisions in the ring. Both new champions will be crowned at Backlash.

A six-pack challenge featuring Nikki Bella, Becky Lynch, Alexa Bliss, Naomi, Carmella, and Natalya will determine the first SmackDown Women’s Champion on the September 11th show.

And a tournament to crown the first SmackDown Tag Team Champions will conclude at Backlash as well. American Alpha, The Usos, The Hype Bros, The Ascension, Breezango, and The Vaudevillains will be in the tournament.

But it may still be expanded, as Heath Slater was given the opportunity to find a partner by the end of the night. Slater will be added to the SmackDown roster if he wins the entire tournament.

UPDATE: Slater will be teaming with Rhyno next week.

Backlash will be the first brand-specific pay-per-view since the WWE Draft.
