Gunther: Triple H ‘saved wrestling’ to a big degree

Gunther is a big Triple H guy.

Speaking to Ariel Helwani on Wednesday, he said he believes WWE’s Chief Content Officer saved professional wrestling by pushing the company to open up to talent from around the world.

Gunther said:

“Obviously, he’s my boss and I’m in a very good position at the company right now, but I think, to a certain degree, that he saved professional wrestling, to a big degree, I think. Because I remember when I started-2005, I started-and all the Europeans that tried to get into WWE, there was such a mystery about it, like who to talk to and what to do. It seemed so far away, such an unrealistic point to achieve. And Hunter was the one that pushed for opening the world to WWE and created so many jobs and opportunities back then for so many of the guys, like for us, for all the European guys.”

“He opened the floodgates for the wrestling world outside of WWE and since then the change has been very positive. I think that was a big achievement, to be honest, because the business changed since then and it changed to the better,” he added.

Gunther added that he has spent the vast majority of his time in WWE taking direction from Levesque, aside from when he was on the main roster working under Vince McMahon. He signed with the company in late 2018 and debuted on NXT UK the following January. He moved to the NXT brand—and to the United States—in 2022. He debuted on the April 8, 2022, episode of SmackDown, a few months before McMahon announced his ‘retirement’ on July 22. Gunther described his time working under McMahon as “a strange work experience.”

“I was under Vince for four months or something, and it was a strange work experience,” Gunther said. “The direction was very confusing. It was hard to figure out what was expected of me.”

He added that he only had two conversations with McMahon during that period.
