Cody Rhodes on potential heel turn: ‘I don’t know if we’re on that road’

Cody Rhodes doesn’t know if he has enough time left in wrestling for a heel turn.

After saying in an interview last week that he feels his time as a babyface is almost up, Rhodes told Busted Open Radio on Tuesday that he doesn’t know if he has enough time left in wrestling for a heel turn to ever happen.

Rhodes said:

“Well, one thing I’ve noticed about (discussion of him turning heel) is it only really exists on X. And, like, it’s deep, the discussion. It’s a deep discussion.”

You never say never in wrestling. There are plenty of people that got the capacity for the light and the dark. But I don’t know. I don’t know if we’re on that road within the time I have left on my time in wrestling”

Last month, Rhodes said during an appearance at Fanatics Fest that he feels he’s at the “tail end” of his babyface run, and that while he’d like to continue in the role for the rest of his career, “there’s only so much someone can like you.” During the same appearance, he addressed The Rock wanting him to turn heel, saying, “If The Rock had it his way, I would have been changed already.”

Cody Rhodes addresses response to WrestleMania 41 match with John Cena

Also on Busted Open, Rhodes spoke about facing John Cena at SummerSlam after losing the title to him at WrestleMania 41. He briefly addressed criticism some had of the match, saying that “if people felt a certain way” about it, it’s their goal to correct this at SummerSlam.

“I don’t want to go as far as making any promises. But I can tell you, the goal with SummerSlam is if people felt a certain way about WrestleMania, I would put that all on my back and take all the credit and responsibility for (them) perhaps not feeling satisfied. I’d like to get them to the finish line with SummerSlam. Very much looking forward to doing this dance again.”

Rhodes earned the right to challenge Cena at SummerSlam after winning the 2025 King of the Ring, beating Randy Orton in the finals at Night of Champions on Saturday in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Rhodes’ comments are available in the subscriber version of the podcast below. His appearance begins around the 2-hour, 33-second mark here.
