CM Punk thinks WWE tag team with John Cena would be ‘pretty interesting’

CM Punk is interested in teaming up with John Cena before Cena ends his in-ring career.

At WWE & Mattel’s San Diego Comic-Con panel, Punk was asked who he would choose as his partner for a tag team match. After joking that he would pick his dog Larry, Punk said he thinks the idea of him and Cena teaming together during Cena’s retirement tour is “pretty interesting.”

“If I had to tag up with somebody to beat some people up? It would probably be Larry. Everybody’s asking me, because Cena has announced his retirement — obviously they want to see us fight each other,” Punk said. “I think there’s something to me and him tagging. I think that could be pretty interesting.”

Punk has compared the dynamic between him and Cena to being like Batman (Punk) and Superman (Cena). They’ve been in-ring rivals in the past, including Cena being the opponent for Punk’s WWE Championship win at Money in the Bank 2011. They also had a stellar match against each other on WWE Raw in February 2013.

Cena has announced that 2025 will be the final year of his in-ring career. His retirement tour is set to last from January through December. The number of dates he Cena on working is “in the mid-30s to 40s.”

After suffering a torn triceps back in January, Punk is now cleared to return and will face off against Drew McIntyre in a grudge match at SummerSlam this Saturday. Seth Rollins will be the special guest referee for the match.
