Aussie Open are now double champions in NJPW, but not everyone was left unscathed after the match.

On Monday morning’s Wrestling Observer Radio, Bryan Alvarez discussed Hiroshi Tanahashi suffering a broken rib when he and Kazuchika Okada took on the Motor City Machine Guns and Aussie Open in a three-way for the Strong Tag Team titles at NJPW Capital Collision on Saturday. Alvarez guessed that the injury may have happened during a collision spot on the outside by members of Aussie Open.

“As [Tanahashi] fell, he kind of hit the ring apron, but didn’t hit it super hard or sold for it, so it may not have been that,” Alvarez said.

Alvarez also suggested that Tanahashi may have been injured in the combo cutter move that took place right after the collision spot. He said after that spot, it was clear Tanahashi was hurting and toughing out the rest of the match, including what he called “one of the worst high fly flows ever.”

Another spot Alvarez pointed out was when Kyle Fletcher did a moonsault and crashed hard into the barricade, saying at first he thought it was the legs but then saw he was draped over the guardrail. But despite the injuries, Alvarez had positive thoughts on the match.

“It was a really good match despite the injury and the near injury,” he said.
