UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones is now listed as a suspect in a hit-and-run accident by the Albuquerque (NM) Police Department (APD) after an auto accident early Sunday morning.
The APD suspects the 27-year-old Jones was involved in a three-car accident with a woman in her 20s who was pregnant and was hospitalized with minor injuries. According to Brett Okamoto of ESPN, an off-duty police officer identified Jones as fleeing from the scene. The car Jones is suspected of being in was a rental car that also contained a marijuana pipe. Okamoto also said the ABQ spokesperson he talked with was very clear there was no cocaine in the car.
As of Monday morning, MMAFighting.com’s Ariel Helwani tweeted that Jones or his lawyer have yet to contact the APD, who are following up with the female victim on her health status.
The UFC released this statement Sunday:
“We are aware that the Albuquerque Police Department is interested in speaking to Jon Jones regarding his possible involvement in a motor vehicle accident. We are in the process of gathering facts and will reserve further comment until more information is available.”
The company has not made any statements regarding Jones’ situation regarding UFC 187 and his scheduled championship defense against Anthony “Rumble” Johnson on 5/23. Jones (21-1) last competed in early-January, defeating rival Daniel Cormier via unanimous decision to retain his title for the eighth time. Since rising to prominence, Jones has found himself at the center of controversy due to a failed cocaine test, a DUI arrest, and various social media follies.
