UFC on ESPN 5 live results: Colby Covington vs. Robbie Lawler

The Octagon heads back to Newark for the first time since January 2016 with a pivotal welterweight main event on an afternoon of fights.

Former Interim UFC Welterweight Champion Colby Covington takes on former UFC Welterweight Champion Robbie Lawler in the five-round main event. Covington fights for the first time since a June 2018 win over Rafael Dos Anjos to become the interim champion, and he enters the fight on a six-fight win streak. Lawler is looking to end a two-fight losing skid after a controversial loss to Ben Askren at UFC 235 in March.

In the co-main event, it is a lightweight fight between two long-time UFC veterans Jim Miller and Clay Guida. Miller has had 32 UFC fights since debuting in 2008 while Guida has had 27 UFC fights since his 2006 debut, but they surprisingly have never been matched up until now. Both men are looking to score their second straight win.

They trade kicks to start things off. Granger lands a right hand. They trade and Goldy lands a left hand. They trade in close range. Granger lands some knees in the clinch. They trade and Goldy lands a left hook and Granger lands a head kick. Granger lands a solid combo. They clinch and both battle for position as they trade knees. They break and trade late. 10-9 Granger.

Both missing on strikes in the first minute of the round. Granger lands a combo and they trade leg kicks. Goldy with a high kick and Granger counters with a left hand that rocks Goldy. Goldy throwing body kicks and a couple of them land. Goldy lands a left hook that stuns Granger. They trade in close range. Granger with a body kick. Goldy with a side head kick at the end. Silva lands a left hand to start. Williams lands a right hand. Silva with kicks and lands one to the body. Williams lands a right hand that stuns Silva. Silva with a body kick. Silva gets a takedown and has the back. Silva landing punches from the back. Silva with more hard punches and has the rear-naked choke locked in and gets the tap! Dominant showing from Silva.

Women’s Flyweights

Both connect early. Borella lands a right hand right on the nose of Murphy. Borella landing better through two minutes. Murphy lands a right hand and Borella counters with a leg kick. They trade punches. They trade in close range. Murphy with a late right hand. Close round. 10-9 Borella.

Murphy with a right hand and Borella counters with a right hand. Borella with a right hand. Murphy with a combo. Borella with some punches. Borella gets a takedown after she ducks under a right hand from Murphy. Murphy with an elbow from the bottom. Borella lands a couple punches from the top and Murhpy scrambles to her feet. Borella has the neck of Murphy. Murphy with a back elbow as she gets her head free. They trade knees in the clinch. Murphy with late punches in the clinch. 10-9 Murphy, 19-19.

They trade punches to start the third. Borella tries for a takedown but Murphy slips away. Murphy lands an uppercut and Borella is on the retreat. Murphy drops Borella with a big knee and then lands some follow up elbows from the top and finishes Borella off. Great finish by Murphy as she gets the big win.

Flyweights

Espinosa lands a right hand. Espinosa tries a takedown but Schnell grabs the neck looking for the guillotine but Espinosa pops out and now Schnell looking for a triangle choke. It is locked in and Espinosa taps! Nice finish by Schnell in his flyweight return.

> Antonina Shevchenko (#15, 7-1, 1-1 UFC) vs. Lucie Pudilova (8-4, 2-3 UFC)
Women’s Flyweights

They clinch right away and Shevchenko lands some good knees to the body. Shevchenko grabs the body and continues to land some knees. She lands some more and the referee breaks them up. They clinch right away and trade knees. Shevchenko with some more knees in the clinch. Pudilova landed two big elbows as they break and Shevchenko is cut open. Pudilova gets a takedown and in the half-guard. Pudilova with some elbows from the top. Shevchenko grabs the arm and gets the armbar locked in and it is in tight. Pudilova is trying to fight it off and is able to escape and they scramble up. Fun round. 10-9 Shevchenko.

Pudilova comes forward looking for the takedown and they clinch. Pudilova slams Shevchenko down. Shevchenko had the back and has a deep rear-naked choke locked in and this might be done. Pudilova goes out cold! Great finish by Shevchenko in a wild fight.

Welterweights

Gall with a leg kick and then a body kick. Gall with a combo but Touahri lands a hook that stuns Gall. They clinch and Gall with a knee to the body. They break and Gall with a leg kick. Gall shoots for a takedown and pushes Touahri against the fence. Gall takes the back. Gall lands some knees and almost landed an illegal knee. Touahri escapes as Gall was trying to drag him down. They break. Gall with a left hand. Touahri tries a takedown but Gall sprawls and transitions to the back. Gall lands punches from the back. Big round for Gall. 10-9 Gall.

Gall tries a takedown and lands a right hand. Touahri lands a left hand. Gall with a body kick. They clinch against the fence. Gall with an elbow. Gall with an uppercut and elbow on the break. Gall with a jumping knee. Gall lands a right hand. They trade punches and Gall ends with a left hand. Gall grabs the single-leg and gets Touahri down but Touahri reverses to the top and in the half-guard. Touahri lands some punches from the top and keeps landing. They scramble to their feet. Gall lands some elbows as they break. They go back to the mat and Touahri ends on top. 10-9 Touahri, 19-19.

Touahri tries a takedown but Gall defends. Both guys land punches. Touahri with a combo to the body and Gall gets a clinch against the fence and takes the back. Gall landing punches as they break. Gall with a right hand. Gall gets Touahri down and has the back. Gall still has the back but Touahri slips out and is on top. Gall pushes him away. Holtzman gets into the half-guard. Holtzman looking to set up an arm-triangle. Holtzman gets to the mount as Ma hangs onto his head. Holtzman still trying to set up the choke and gives up the mount back to the guard. Holtzman with some elbows from the top. Holtzman landing from the top. They get up and trade punches. They trade to start the second. Holtzman with a leg kick. Holtzman with a right hand. Ma has a huge mouse underneath his left eye. They are both throwing big punches. Ma gets a takedown. They get up and Ma has the body lock. Holtzman with an uppercut to the body. Holtzman lands a combo. Ma with a counter right hand. They trade and Ma drops Holtzman with a left hook but Holtzman gets right up. They are clinched but break. Holtzman lands a hard right hand and Ma is eating them. Holtzman with some leg kicks. Holtzman with a late takedown. Holtzman with some hard shots from the top as the round ends. 10-9 Holtzman, 20-18 Holtzman.

The fight is stopped in between rounds as Ma’s left eye is completely closed and he can’t see out of it. Holtzman gets the win.

Middleweights

Giles lands a hard right hand that snaps Meerschaert’s head back. Meerschaert with a knee to the body and Giles gets a takedown off of it and moves to side control. Giles with a left hand from the top. Meerschaert reverses as he almost had an arm-triangle locked in but doesn’t have it fully in as he sweeps to the top. Meerschaert with punches from the top. Giles able to reverse to the top and gets the back of Meerschaert and lands a couple of punches. Giles moves to side control. Giles lands from the top at the end. 10-9 Giles.

Giles with a body kick and Meerschaert gets the body lock against the fence. Meerschaert trying for a takedown but Giles is on top in the half-guard. Giles with an elbow from the top. Giles moves to the mount but goes back to side control. Meerschaert gives up his back and Giles lands some punches and now goes back to the mount. Meerschaert gives up his back but sweeps to the top and gets in the guard of Giles. Meerschaert landing soft punches from the top as Giles is trying to control the posture. Meerschaert with a left hand from the top. 10-9 Meerschaert, 19-19.

Meerschaert with a body kick. Meerschaert with a head kick that is partially blocked. Meerschaert shoots for the takedown but Giles sprawls. They get up and Meerschaert gets the takedown. Meerschaert goes for a choke but Giles defending but he taps and it is missed and Meerschaert chokes him out cold! Wow, that wasn’t a pretty finish as Giles was badly out cold and Meerschaert gets the win.

Miller with a left hand that hurts Guida and Miller grabs a guillotine and locks it in tight and Guida goes out cold. Wow, what a finish by Miller in front of his home state fans. Herb Dean is having a bad night as that’s two fighters he’s missed going out cold.
