Report: Max Holloway-Frankie Edgar title fight on tap for UFC 240

According to ESPN’s Brett Okamoto, UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway and former UFC lighweight champion Frankie Edgar will do battle at July’s UFC 240 in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

This will be the third time Holloway and Edgar have been scheduled for a fight. The first was at UFC 218 in December 2017, but an Edgar injury scrapped that. They were then scheduled for UFC 222 in March 2018, but Holloway had to pull out due to a leg injury.

The 27-year-old Holloway saw his 13-fight win streak snapped at April’s UFC 236 as he moved up in weight to face Dustin Poirier for the interim lightweight title. He will be looking for the third defense of his featherweight belt. This will be his sixth straight fight with either an undisputed or interim title involved.

The 37-year-old Edgar has been on the shelf since defeating Cub Swanson by decision in April 2018, his first fight after a first round knockout loss to Brian Ortega. He has fought sparingly in the last few years due to injury but has gone 3-1 since losing a decision to Jose Aldo for the interim featherweight belt at UFC 200 in July 2016.

One wrinkle is that arguably, the top challenger is Alexander Volkanovski who defeated Aldo by decision this past Saturday at UFC 237 for his 17th straight win, seven of those in the Octagon. However, he has fought twice in less than five months and with UFC apparently wanting the division to start moving forward in just a few month and needing a main event for the show, they went back to the Edgar well.
