Conor McGregor is blaming a broken toe as the reason he had to withdraw from next Saturday’s UFC 303.
McGregor took to Instagram Friday to finally reveal the actual injury that took his fight with Michael Chandler off the table last week after speculation that it was in jeopardy following a last-minute cancelation of a press event in Dublin.
“We had a lapse in concentration and engaged in a training session without wearing the full protective gear and I hit the toe off the elbow and broke the toe clean. It needs a few weeks that’s it. I couldn’t justify to my team, or fans, that I make the walk hindered again. That walk has been seen. This next walk has got to be, and it will be, 100% Conor McGregor,” he wrote, later adding he has two fights left on his current deal.
Chandler was also taken off the card and replaced with a new main event of light heavyweight champion Alex Pereira defending against Jiri Prochazka. Ariel Helwani had previously reported there is hope of making the McGregor vs. Chandler fight happen this August or September.
A slight lapse in concentration and a nuisance of an injury was picked up. That’s it. Take the lesson and move forward. I will get this back,” he wrote. The next fight will be McGregor’s first since July 2021.
In response to criticism and doubt from former UFC star Chael Sonnen, McGregor then posted pictures of the toe on X:
