Wrestling world pays tribute to Sabu

The wrestling world is paying tribute to Sabu.

Wrestlers and promotions across social media paid tribute to the former ECW and hardcore legend following the announcement of his death on Sunday. WWE, TNA, AEW, GCW, and other promotions have shared their own tributes to Sabu, who was wrestled or appeared in every major promotion over the last few decades.

Sami Zayn reposted a post from earlier in the year requesting Sabu be in WWE’s Hall of Fame, writing: “This is a gut punch. I was pushing this agenda again a few weeks ago after Sabu had his final match. RIP Sabu. One of a kind, absolute legend, and a true game changer for professional wrestling.”

Sabu had just wrestled his final match during WrestleMania 41 weekend, defeating Joey Janela on April 18 in a no-rope barbed wire match. Janela wrote on X: “Thank you to my idol, a trailblazer, a gamechanger and an icon. I Love you and will miss you dearly Sabu, rest now.”

Dave Meltzer reflected on Terry Funk’s thoughts of Sabu, who cited him as a major influence: “Almost nobody I know thought more fondly of Sabu than Terry Funk. Sabu was actually a huge influence on him late in his career and and he told me many times that Sabu did far more for the business than he ever got in return.”

Meltzer, along with Garrett Gonzales, recorded a special edition of Wrestling Observer Radio on Sunday covering the career of Sabu:
