Shinjiro Otani issues statement, still paralyzed from the neck down

Shinjiro Otani has issued his first statement since suffering a cervical spinal cord injury last month.  

The 49-year-old was injured in the main event of a ZERO1 event on April 10 after taking a German suplex into the corner. He remained motionless after taking the move and has not regained the use of his arms or legs. Surgery was performed to prevent further deterioration of the injury on April 13. 

ZERO1 posted a statement from Otani on Friday and also confirmed that he is still paralyzed from the neck down. 

A translation of Otani’s statement reads as follows: 

“To all the hot professional wrestling fans who love professional wrestling, and to all the people involved in the professional wrestling industry.

I’m really sorry for the inconvenience and concern caused by my injury.

Also, I am grateful to everyone for their warm feelings.

Now, I am working hard every day for treatment and rehabilitation so that I can return to everyone as soon as possible.

I will definitely return in front of you.

We look forward to your continued support of ZERO1 and professional wrestling.

A benefit show for Otani will be held on June 4. It will take place from the Ota Ward General Gymnasium in Tokyo. Yuji Nagata, Tomoaki Honma, and Togi Makabe from NJPW are scheduled to take part. Pro Wrestling NOAH will also be sending wrestlers to the show.
