NJPW Road to Power Struggle 10-23 results: Sydal, Ricochet and Tanahashi vs. Beretta, Rocky Romero and Kazuchika Okada

Welcome to this morning’s coverage of the NJPW Road to Power Struggle card, held in Saitama. This show is a fixed camera event with no commentary.

Tiger Mask and Jushin Liger defeated Sho Tanaka & Yohei Komatsu. Solid opener, just basic stuff. Tiger Mask pinned Komatsu with the Tiger Bomb. Very short.

reDragon defeated Jay White and Juice Robinson. Robison looked better here than he has in other outings thus far, he’s coming into his own here and the people were into him. reDragon took him out with a variation of the old Total Elimination move then pinned White with the Chasing the Dragon. This match had more time than the opener and was pretty solid.

Kenny Omega came out and introduced Chase Owens as the latest member of the Bullet Club. He came out sporting a beard and and new gear. Omega promised everyone would bow down to him, he’d rule the world, and so on. All I could really think about were nWo B-team comparisons during this promo. Not that he’s bad, because he’s better than most of the nWo B-squad but the Bullet Club feels kind of inflated enough at this point.

Kenny Omega, Chase Owens and the Young Bucks defeated Timesplitters, Ryusuke Taguchi and Mascara Dorada. Good match. Dorada again was a highlight, busting out a tope early. Omega almost planted him with the One Winged Angel but Dorada countered it into a DDT. The other three members gave their finishers to Dorada but his teammates broke it up. They isolated him again and Omega pinned him with the One Winged Angel.

Katsuyori Shibata & Hirooki Goto defeated Tama Tonga and Cody Hall. Pretty okay. Cody seems to be trying new things, which is cool, but the execution is still a bit sloppy. He went for the Razor’s Edge but Shibata countered in mid air to a sleeper, put him on the floor then pinned him after a Penalty Kick. Cool finish.

Tomoaki Honma & Togi Makabe defeated Gedo and Tomohiro Ishii. Just a match, nothing much to it. The build was mostly toward Ishii and Makabe’s title match at Power Struggle. Gedo held his own against Makabe for a bit, but ate a lariat and was pinned with the king kong knee drop.

Karl Anderson and Doc Gallows defeated Yoshi-Hashi and Toru Yano. It was a match you’d expect from these four. It was fine, but nothing memorable. Yoshi-Hashi did have some fire while making a comeback, and the crowd were into him a bit as well. Anderson pins him with a stun gun.

Hiroshi Tanahashi, Matt Sydal and Ricochet defeated Rocky Romero, Beretta and Kazuchika Okada. This was solid, but not as good as you’d think a match like this would be. Very standard tag team match with one or two cool moves in between. Tanahashi won with the high fly flow, pinning Beretta.

Tanahashi tuned up the usual air guitar and played to close out the show. It was fun while it lasted, but there really isn’t anything you need to go back and watch.
