Jon Jones wins heavyweight title at UFC 285

Two new champions were crowned at Saturday’s UFC 285.
Jon Jones defeated Ciryl Gane to win the UFC heavyweight title for the first time, submitting Gane in 2:00 of the first round with a guillotine. During his post-fight interview, he called out Stipe Miocic. Joe Rogan during the interview threw out International Fight Week in July as a possible date for the fight.
Saturday was Jones’ first fight since February 8, 2020 when he defeated Dominick Reyes by unanimous decision. It was also his debut in the heavyweight division, as he has spent most of his career as a light heavyweight.
Valentina Schevchenko, meanwhile, was dethroned by Alexa Grosso at 4:34 of round 4. The finish of that fight had Schevchenko miss a spinning kick, which allowed Grosso to jump on Schevchenko’s back, locking in a choke. Schevchenko submitted, making Grosso the new UFC flyweight champion. Schevchenko’s loss on Saturday was her first since 2017.
Schevchenko had been champion since UFC 231 on December 8, 2018, defeating Joanna Jedrzejczyk.
