Kenny Omega vacates AAA Mega Championship due to injury

Update —

Following the announcement that Kenny Omega has vacated the Mega Championship, Lucha Libre AAA posted a promo from Omega where he blamed AAA for “stealing” the title from him and never offering to postpone his match against El Hijo del Vikingo. Omega vowed to come back and win the Mega Championship again.

With Kenny Omega out of action due to injury, the Lucha Libre AAA Mega Championship has officially been declared vacant.

AAA’s Dorian Roldan announced on Monday that Omega has vacated the Mega Championship due to his injuries and needing to undergo surgery. Omega was scheduled to defend the title against El Hijo del Vikingo at Triplemania Regia on Saturday, December 4.

More information on how a new champion will be crowned will be announced soon. Roldan noted that Vikingo will challenge for the vacant title.

Dave Meltzer reported last week that Omega will be undergoing shoulder, knee, and abdomen surgeries, along with a potential septum surgery. None of the surgeries are considered major, and Omega is hoping to return to the ring in late February.

Omega dropped the AEW World Championship to Hangman Page at Full Gear on November 13.

Omega had held the AAA Mega Championship since defeating Rey Fenix for the title in October 2019. During his reign, Omega made successful title defenses against Jack Evans, Dragon Lee, Sammy Guevara, Laredo Kid, and Andrade El Idolo.
