Rey Mysterio returning to NJPW for final show of 2018 G1 Climax

Rey Mysterio will be returning to New Japan Pro Wrestling at next month’s G1 finals.
NJPW announced tonight that Mysterio will be wrestling at Budokan Hall on August 12 as part of the final show for this year’s G1. The show is the last of NJPW’s three consecutive nights at the venue.
NJPW didn’t reveal an opponent for Mysterio or any further details about the match that he’ll be in.
Mysterio made his NJPW debut at last month’s Dominion event in Osaka. He teamed with Hiroshi Tanahashi & Jushin Thunder Liger against Cody Rhodes, Marty Scurll & Hangman Page, with Cody getting the pin on Liger.
Mysterio was originally supposed to debut for NJPW in a singles match against Liger at Strong Style Evolved in Long Beach, California this past March, but a bicep injury prevented him from wrestling at the show. He still made an appearance at Strong Style Evolved but had no involvement with last Saturday’s G1 Special at the Cow Palace.
Dave Meltzer reported in this week’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter that, while Mysterio hasn’t signed with WWE, the discussions are at a point where they’ve talked about what commitments he has left. Meltzer noted that Mysterio wants to wrestle at All In as scheduled, while WWE would rather he didn’t. Meltzer also wrote that Mysterio wants to drop the Heavyweight title that he holds in The Crash Lucha Libre before returning to WWE.
