NJPW G1 Climax 26 night 16 results: Tomoaki Honma vs. Michael Elgin

This morning’s show takes place in Yamagata, and it will be the final G1 show before the last three shows that will take place at Sumo Hall. Just a reminder, those shows will have English commentary (Kevin Kelly and Steve Corino) for those interested.

Ryusuke Taguchi defeated David Finlay with the Dodon.

Bad Luck Fale, Tama Tonga, & Yujiro Takahashi defeated Satoshi Kojima, Manabu Nakanishi, & Juice Robinson when Tonga pinned Robinson with the Gun Stun.

BUSHI & SANADA defeated Hiroyoshi Tenzan & Captain New Japan when SANADA submitted Captain New Japan with the Skull End.

Kazuchika Okada, Tomohiro Ishii, Hirooki Goto, Gedo, & Naomichi Marufuji defeated Hiroshi Tanahashi, Togi Makabe, KUSHIDA, Jushin Liger, & Tiger Mask when Goto pinned Liger with the GTR.

Kenny Omega defeated Katsuhiko Nakajima

This was a pretty good back and forth match. Omega seemed on tonight and looked great, doing a lot of the offense early. Omega went for the kick but Nakajima avoided him and tried for a German suplex.

Omega got to his feet, laid him out with the kick, and went for the One Winged Angel but Nakajima escaped.Nakajima eventually hit the Penalty Kick, but Omega came back out of nowhere with the reverse rana and hit the One Winged Angel for the win.

EVIL defeated Toru Yano

Not much of a match and pretty short. Yano did the exposed turnbuckle bit. He slingshotted EVIL into the exposed buckle but EVIL dodged and Yano ran into it. Didn’t last long as EVIL won clean with the STO.

Tetsuya Naito defeated YOSHI-HASHI

Another good match. YOSHI-HASHI’s matches get a lot of heat and this one was no different. This picked up a lot towards the end. Lots of cool back and forth counters. Naito went for the Destino but YH countered with a slam.

YH hit the senton for another near fall. YH took Naito to the ground and went for the butterfly lock. Naito escaped and hit a flurry of offense (though he botched a reverse DDT) then hit Destino for the win.

Katsuyori Shibata defeated Yuji Nagata

Solid stuff, but they’ve had way better matches in recent years. They brawled and exchanged shots. Nagata went after Shibata’s bum shoulder, doing the white eyes armbar. He tried the backdrop driver but Shibata blocked it. When Nagata went for a flurry, he shot back with a dropkick.

Nagata fired back with more shots but Shibata caught him in a sleeper. Surprisingly, Nagata was trapped and ended up passing out, giving the win to Shibata. Hey, cool finish, that puts the sleeper over as a possible match ending move down the line.

Michael Elgin defeated Tomoaki Honma

Awesome match, the crowd was totally into Honma and wanted him to win. Elgin looked the best he has on this tour so far, same with Honma and that equaled a great match. Honma missed his Kokeshi early. Elgin waffled Honma with a lariat but he rebounded and hit a Kokeshi on Elgin’s arm and made a comeback.

The crowd was totally into Honma; if he were to win, it would likely mean he’d get a title shot down the line. Honma came back with two more Kokeshis and a brainbuster, then tried for the big one but Elgin fired back.

Elgin gave Honma a Death Valley Driver on the apron and powerbombed him into the post, then followed with the deadlift Falcon Arrow slam for a near fall. Elgin hit a buckle bomb but Honma immediately bounced back and hit the Kokeshi. He hit the sit-out piledriver then tried the top rope Kokeshi but Elgin dodged.

Honma tried to fight back, but it didn’t work. Elgin hit the buckle bomb and the spiral bomb for the win.
