Steve Rickard, New Zealand wrestler/promoter passes away
Steve Rickard, who was the promoter during the glory days of New Zealand wrestling in the 1970s after a long career in the ring, passed away yesterday at the age of 85.
There has been considerable mainstream publicity in the country for his death. Rickard started wrestling as an amateur and was a local and international star in the ring, as well as one of the hosts of “On the Mat,” the New Zealand televised wrestling show that aired from 1975 to 1984, that featured many of the biggest stars of that era.
Rickard also promoted tours all over the world including throughout the Middle East, India, Malaysia, Thailand and in the 70s was the NWA promoter of record, purchasing the territory from Ed Francis, and eventually selling it to Peter Maivia.
