MONDAY’S NEWS UPDATE

  • Bryan and I will be back tonight with Wrestling Observer radio, covering Raw, Jeff Novitzky to UFC, New Japan Invasion Attack, the next WWE & New Japan PPV shows as well as taking questions that can be sent to mailbag@wrestlingobserver.com
  • With WWE starting its European tour on Wednesday, the talent working Glasgow is expected to leave directly from Austin tonight and not be appearing tomorrow for Smackdown.  the stars advertised for Glasgow are John Cena, Seth Rollins, Randy Orton, Kane, Rusev and Dean Ambrose.  However, Ambrose and Rollins are both advertised as appearing in Dallas as well. 
  • Tamina Snuka and Finn Balor are scheduled for the European tour.  Snuka is at TV today although that doesn’t mean she’ll be on the show.  Brad Maddox was also brought to TV today.
  • Nothing has been announced for the show, but Michael Cole will be back announcing this week.  I’d  think he’ll be announcing in a neck brace for at least a few weeks given the Brock Lesnar attack, but who knows.
  • A.J. Lee’s only twitter statement so far regarding leaving WWE is “Break the rules.  Be a fighter. Any dream is possible if you are brave enough to do it YOUR way.  Thank you all.”
  • Chris Jericho will do a live interview with John Cena on the WWE Network tonight airing right after Raw.  Will be interesting to compare the Jericho approach to that of Steve Austin, who was originally in that position.
  • The entire A.J. Styles vs. Kota Ibushi presentation yesterday was just spectacular.  As noted in the update last night, the Styles vs. Kazuchika Okada IWGP title match will be on 7/5 at Osaka Jo Hall.
  • A hearing on whether Bellator will get an injunction to prohibit Quinton Rampage Jackson from fighting in UFC, and in particular for his 4/25 fight in Montreal against Fabio Maldonado, is scheduled for tomorrow.
  • UFC Fight Pass will be spending this week celebrating the 10th anniversary of Griffin vs. Bonnar, which they are calling the single most important fight in UFC history.  On the site and featured today will be the fight itself, as well as a Forrest Griffin documentary.  Tomorrow will be Griffin’s favorite fights of his own career, and his favorite all-time UFC fights, footage of the original 2005 auditions for the cast and rare new footage from early seasons of the show.  Wednesday will be a Joe Rogan feature covering the best fights in TUF history, as well as a best knockouts feature on fighters who originally made their name on the show.  Thursday will air the complete card from Las Vegas ten years after the fact, and eight famous moments from the first five seasons of the show.  Friday will have Griffin and Stephan Bonnar introduce the 25 craziest and most controversial moments in TUF history.
  • Thursday is actually the 10th anniversary of the fight and UFC’s first-ever live televised card.
  • ROH today announced Tetsuya Naito coming to the four shows with New Japan in May in Philadelphia and Toronto.  We’ve got a full story on the tour in this week’s Observer as well as a complete listing of the New Japan TV schedule in the U.S. through August.
  • I’ll be teaching a class in Sports Marketing on Thursday morning at Stanford with Paraag Marathe, who went from being a student in the class to being the President of the San Francisco 49ers.
  • Los Matadores were working over the weekend in Puerto Rico for WWC. (thanks to Ivan Pajic)
  • Pro Wrestling Spain is running a major show on 5/2 in Bilbao, Spain featuring Joe E. Legend, Red Eagle (the biggest star in Portugal) and some Spanish wrestlers who have worked for Zero-One in Japan.
  • In weekend picks, Mike Sempervive, Jack Encarnacao, John Pollock and David Bixenspan all went 6-0.  Todd Martin, Steve Juon , Mike Sawyer and Frontrow Brian went 5-1.  Me and Josh Nason went 4-2. 
  • Jake Roberts appears on Wednesday at 8 p.m. at the Baltimore Comedy Factory doing a speaking tour, working with Sinn Bodhi.
  • Renzo Gracie will be doing the announcing of Friday night’s World Series of Fighting show from Mashantucket, CT, headlined by Ronnie Markes vs. David Branch.  Melvin Guillard vs. Ozzy Dugulubgov, is off the show.  Guillard didn’t get his medicals done in time.  Luis Montoya will replace him.  And Ben Fodor, formerly known as Phoenix Jones, the former crime fighter from Seattle, faces Emmanuel Walo.
