WON NEWSLETTER: September 13, 2021 Observer Newsletter: AEW All Out review, Gable Steveson signs with WWE

Bryan Danielson, Adam Cole (Austin Jenkins), Ruby Soho (Dori Prange) and Minoru Suzuki were all unannounced surprises on AEW’s All Out on 9/5 from the NOW Arena in Hoffman Estates, IL.

The show may end up historical and certainly felt like it was historic in the building. It felt it just as much if not more watching on television with the announcers soundtrack. In the days that have passed, many have talked about it as the best U.S.-based PPV show in history and it has to be in the discussion. There have been a few better shows judged strictly by match quality, and it’s too soon to ascertain anything long-term of what it means. Short-term it led to Dynamite beating Raw for the first time ever same day in the same week.

But when you consider atmosphere, news value, crowd, announcing match depth and creativity, it’s a hard one to beat.

  • Lilian Garcia sang the national anthem at last night’s SmackDown.
  • Ariel Helwani reported that last night’s SmackDown drew the highest gate in the show’s history: “Last night’s WWE Smackdown at MSG produced the highest grossest Smackdown gate of all time, per sources. Not just in NY. Of any city ever for any SD. (Smackdown has been around for 20 years.)”

  • Cultaholic has an interview with Finn Balor. Balor said he’d like to wrestle for promotions in other countries while contracted to WWE: “I love the idea of the Forbidden Door. I feel like if I have an opportunity to wrestle in Japan or Mexico or Europe, for whatever promotion, I would love to be able to do. Obviously, contractually in WWE, they take care of all my dates and my bookings and my travel. They organize everything. If we could set up a working relationship between some of these other brands from around the world, I would love to challenge myself against performers from different regions.”

Other Wrestling

  • Ruby Soho told Sports Illustrated about her decision to join AEW: “Choosing AEW wasn’t a difficult decision. I had been a fan of AEW long before I left WWE. I could sense there was something very special and very different about this company. Now that I’m here, I am beginning to realize it was the home I have always been searching for. This is where I belong, and I’m honored to have the opportunity to be here.”
  • Brittany Pillman, Brian Pillman Jr.’s sister who was involved in the angle with Pillman Jr. and MJF on this week’s Dynamite, gave birth to her baby yesterday. • Rok-C spoke to Post Wrestling’s Andrew Thompson about signing with ROH: “So honestly, when I first realized I wanted to be a wrestler, I didn’t think that I would do as much as I did before. How do I say it? WWE was kind of like my dream, you know? I mean it kind of still — I feel like everybody that’s wrestling was like, ‘Oh! WWE,’ but then I kind of, as I was going, I fell in love with the craft and I saw Ring of Honor and I saw Japan, I saw STARDOM. I saw all these different places and I was like, ‘I wanna do everything…’ I can do that, and Ring of Honor, like I said, they were so welcoming and just being there, I just knew that I was happy there and I knew that I’d be happy in the long run as well and I feel like right now, I just — I wanna do so much in Ring of Honor before I do anything else and so, yeah. I can’t wait. I can’t wait.”
  • Fuego Del Sol was the guest on this week’s episode of the AEW Unrestricted podcast.
