WON BACK ISSUE: June 12, 2000 Wrestling Observer Newsletter: Paul Heyman meets with ECW talent, PRIDE 9 results, more

Paul Heyman, who hadn’t appeared at an ECW event since the Hardcore Heaven PPV, surprisingly, after missing the TV taping on 6/2 in New Orleans, flew to Pensacola, FL for the house show for a lengthy ECW team meeting. The one hour long meeting was largely a pep talk, since most of the wrestlers hadn’t even spoken to Heyman in a month, and with smaller crowds, slightly declining ratings and late checks, morale had hit a new low.

Heyman went through a story about where he saw the wrestling business in the U.S. headed. The theory he had was that WWF and USA Network would settle their lawsuit before going to trial because both have so much dirt on the other that would come out in court that both sides stock prices would drop and suffer public embarrassment.

THURSDAY NEWS UPDATE

WWE

  • After a Forbes article revealed that a WWE database left personal information “including addresses, educational background, earnings, and ethnicity” vulnerable, WWE issued a statement today: “Although no credit card or password information was included, and therefore not at risk, WWE is investigating a vulnerability of a database housed on Amazon Web Services (AWS), which has now been secured. WWE utilizes leading cybersecurity firms Smartronix and Praetorian to manage data infrastructure and cybersecurity and to conduct regular security audits on AWS. We are currently working with Amazon Web Services, Smartronix and Praetorian to ensure the ongoing security of our customer information.”
  • Johnny Gargano’s return to WWE television will air on next week’s episode of NXT. He’ll discuss being betrayed by Tommaso Ciampa at NXT TakeOver: Chicago.
  • WWE’s UK Twitter account advertised that Noam Dar will be wrestling at ICW’s Shug’s Hoose Party 4 night one show (which had been announced previously) on July 29th with a video of Dar hyping his match.
  • Samoa Joe will appear on tomorrow’s episode of the Edge and Christian podcast.
  • Renee Young will moderate a WWE/Mattel panel with Sasha Banks, Charlotte Flair, Becky Lynch, Bayley, and Nikki Bella at San Diego Comic-Con on July 20th.
  • AJ Styles discussed his first job and choosing to deliver water over training at the WCW Power Plant in 2000.

Pro Wrestling

  • PWG announced Jeff Cobb, Trevor Lee, and Flash Morgan Webster as entrants for this summer’s Battle of Los Angeles tournament. Cobb and Lee are both PWG regulars, but Webster is making his debut for the promotion. He returned to the ring earlier this year after missing several months due to suffering a fractured ankle and dislocated shoulder in a Cruiserweight Classic qualifier against Zack Sabre Jr. for PROGRESS Wrestling last year.
  • PWG also posted that Rey Fenix will not be appearing at their show tomorrow. He had been scheduled to face Keith Lee, but Lee will now be in a three-way match against Trent Barreta and Lio Rush.
  • Velvet Sky announced that she’s retired from wrestling and has gone back to college. She said that she wants to become a personal trainer.
  • Cody Rhodes tweeted that he had an MRI on his shoulder but the results revealed that he has a grade A separation and won’t have to miss any time.
  • The next member of the TNA/Impact Hall of Fame will be announced on the August 17th episode of Impact.
  • WALTER will challenge Matt Riddle for the Atlas Division Championship at PROGRESS Wrestling’s show in Birmingham on Sunday.
  • “Filthy” Tom Lawlor will debut for Beyond Wrestling on July 30th in Worcester, Massachusetts as part of the matinee card for Americanrana 2017.
  • Diane Von Hoffman, who trained under the Fabulous Moolah and was part of the Moondogs as Moondog Fifi for a bit, passed away today.
  • Nicopro started a streaming channel on YouTube that shows events from some of the smaller promotions in Japan.

UFC/MMA

  • Jon Jones’ one-year suspension officially expired today. Daniel Cormier tweeted to him: “Yo @JonnyBones congrats on ur suspension for steroid abuse getting lifted today. Only a few more weeks now, so please no f**k ups. Thanks DC” And Jones replied: “Come on DC, you can do better. We’ll wait for it”
  • Georges St-Pierre told Ariel Helwani that he sent a text to Michael Bisping and Dana White challenging Bisping to a fight on November 4th at Madison Square Garden. GSP said there’s been no response yet.
  • Cody Garbrandt said that he won’t be back until at least November.
  • Mauricio “Shogun” Rua vs. Ovince Saint Preux is set for UFC Fight Night in Japan on September 23rd.
  • The UFC released the third episode of Embedded for UFC 213.
  • Travis Browne discussed how he caught two people who robbed his home.
  • USA Today has an article on Stipe Miocic working as a firefighter in addition to competing in the UFC.
  • Jonathan Snowden wrote a longform remembrance of Pride.
  • MMA Fighting posted a story on Kazushi Sakuraba’s only night in the UFC.
