This Week’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter Back Issue
Friday Update

- Garrett Gonzales and I have just finished our weekly news in review show. We talked AEW’s future, WrestleMania, Rey Misterio Sr., Jr. and Konnan and Tijuana wrestling, early days of AAA in the U.S., booking the Continental Classic, NXT & AEW ratings, and answered questions. For the weekend, of course we’ll be up tomorrow night after the AEW Worlds End show.
- We’ve got a big new issue of the Observer up on the site. Special note that we’ve had a lot of people contact us both about the Rey Misterio Sr. and Tijuana wrestling story and the breakdown of every PPV this year and how they did.
- Very little has been announced for Smackdown tonight. Cherlea Green will have a celebration. They will likely announce the Cody Rhodes vs. Kevin Owens rematch. Bianca Belair & Naomi & Bayley will face Tiffany Stratton & Nia Jax & Candice LeRae.
- AAA lost its television deal on Unimas in the U.S. The deal expires at the end of the year so Saturday’s show will be the last one. CombatesMX reported the cancellation saying deep budget cuts at Univision as the main reason the show is being dropped.
- Liv Morgan vs Rhea Ripley on the 1/6 Netflix debut will be a last woman standing match for the world title.
The final episode of Rampage is tonight at 10 p.m. on TBS
- Anthony Bowens vs. Chris Jericho
- Private Party vs. Leo Sparrow & Alec Price
- Thunder Rosa vs. Leila Gray
- Hook vs. Nick Wayne
- AEW did 574,000 viewers and an 0.18 in 18-49 which I’d consider great numbers. We don’t have a full chart. It’s listed as second on cable in the time slot behind the Warriors-Lakers NBA game. But Freeform, AMC, Paramount and TNT all did big numbers with Christmas shows that aren’t first run and not listed. The NBA on Christmas is a tradition and did 7.84 million viewers between ESPN and ABC and a 2.32 in 18-49. AEW also beat two networks head-to-head and tied a third.
- NXT on Christmas Eve did 723,000 viewers and 0.14. It beat FOX which is CW’s goal. For Christmas Eve that was a great number, as was AEW’s number.
- Arianna Grace and Stacks Lorenzo at NXT announced that they are engaged.
- Donald Cerrone has just enrolled in the UFC’s drug testing policy meaning he really is planning to fight again. He’ll have to test clean for six months. He’s been open that he’s been using stuff while retired. Cerrone said he will be ready to fight in the summer and wants two more fights before he retires for good. He said he promised his wife no more than two fights and expects to fight at 185. During his prime he mostly fought at 155.
- AEW announced Ricky Morton & Robert Gibson will appear on the 1/4 Collision show in Charlotte and the 1/22 Dynamite episode in Knoxville.
- Hologram has been home of late because his wife was waiting to give birth. She gave birth yesterday so he should be ready to return to the ring imminently.
- The finals of the Gran Alternativa tournament is tonight at Arena Mexico with favorites Ultimo Guerrero & Crixus vs. Templario & Legendario. Legendario looked very impressive for a non-star last Friday. Crixus didn’t, but has a great body and was put over super strong.
- Wrestlecon is doing events in Indianapolis on 1/31 and 2/1 for the Royal Rumble bringing in a ton of major stars including Kurt Angle, Sting, Tnhehardys, ArnAnderson, The Dudleys Jerry Lawler, John Layfield, Lex Luger Jon Moxley, Renee Paquette, Ricky Steamboat, Jake Roberts, Rob Van Dam and more.
- Mark Henry is doing a DJ tour in the UK to coincide with the WWE tour in March, including both after show parties and pre show events for the Raw and Smackdown events. This will be the first time Henry has done this in the U.K.. Events include 3/21 in Manchester, UK at the Mint Lounge, 3/22 in Belfast at the Limelight, 3/23 in Nottingham at the Saltbox, 3/24 in Glasgow at The Garage and 3/28 in London at Studio 338. We’ll have more on this as the events approach.
We always try and give credit to the smaller wrestling companies who do work to provide toys for underprivileged kids in their respective communities. Bob Magee compiles this list every year:
“Promotions held events and gave back to their community; collecting canned and non-perishable food and warm clothing, doing fundraisers for homeless or domestic violence shelters, animal welfare groups, and those with medical needs…and lots of Toys for Tots drives. They did it through wrestling shows, Comic-Cons, playing video games, 10 day marathons sitting on top of a trailer, bowling parties, online trivia contests, chicken BBQ’s, portrait sittings, Twitch streams, and a dozen other means. Fans flocked to venues from Juggalo filled theatre halls to Christian churches to school gyms to bingo halls to rodeo arenas to a Florida parking lot…from California to Iowa to Texas to Massachusetts to Georgia… from British Columbia to Ontario to the Canadian Maritimes…in 31 states and provinces… and gave and gave and gave.
There have been/are 169 charity shows/events/efforts announced (or having taken place) so far to help their communities for the Holidays, collecting donations from fans like you.
From that list, independent wrestling promotions have raised so far this year: $367,157.70 in cash donations, 17,247 pounds (that’s WELL OVER EIGHT TONS) of canned and non-perishable food, 26,143 toys; at least 60 winter jackets, 250 backpacks and “tons of school supplies”, 40 blankets, 8 pairs of gloves, a dozen pair of wool socks, 4 knit hats, over 200assorted “personal care items”; as well as animal blankets, cat litter, indoor dry/wet food, cat/dog toys, and unscented baby wipes for animal rescue groups.
