WEDNESDAY NEWS UPDATE

WWE

  • Braun Strowman tweeted following his release from WWE: “What a chapter in life. Thank you!!!!!”
  • After her release, Lana posted a message thanking the fans for the love they showed her: “I will never forget the fans, and the love they showed me. Whether it was a tank, power-suits, flags, CRUSH, Rusev, 900 partners, weddings or tables: I tried to always entertain you, and you definitely elevated me. Thank you.”
  • Buddy Murphy reflected on his time with WWE coming to an end after being released today: “So Today ends my 8 years with WWE! What a crazy ride! Highest of Highs, Lowest of Lows, but weather I had 3 minutes or 20 minutes I put all my effort into my performances! Nothing is harder when all you want to do is wrestle but you can’t! In my opinion I haven’t even hit my peak yet and I’m excited to see what the next adventure holds. I was lucky enough to work with some of the best talent in the world and learnt a tremendous amount. But trust me… the whole world will know what I meant by ‘Best Kept Secret’ Thank you all!”
  • Liv Morgan tweeted about Ruby Riott’s release: “Whoever is lucky enough to get Heidi Lovelace on their roster, you win.”
  • Santana Garrett commented on her release: “Thank you, @wwe. Peace.. Love & #HeadbandPower. #timetoSHINE #womenswrestling #santanagarrett #wwe #nxt”
  • During an appearance on Busted Open Radio, new Raw play-by-play announcer Jimmy Smith spoke about having Vince McMahon in his ear while doing commentary: “”I had Bjorn Rebney yelling at me in Bellator. It happens. Dana [White] didn’t really do it in UFC, but I’ve dealt with multiple people yelling at me or multiple people talking to me. It wasn’t new at all. When Vince hopped on, it was about things that were specific to WWE that I need to learn that I found helpful. Whenever we’d say, ‘WWE fans’ it’s ‘our fans.’ There’s verbiage specific to the WWE. Every time Vince jumped on, it was, ‘In WWE, we say this.’ Got it. It was all helpful. Three people were never talking at the same time. Even though it was three different voices, they all jumped on at different times. I had [Michael] Cole in my ear because he was producing and I had Kevin [Dunn] and occasionally Vince. Vince, not that much, and Kevin and Cole were good at not stepping on each other. The on-air traffic was great and Kevin gave me plenty of time. The countdowns were shorter, I have to get used to that. It’s the nature of the way wrestling works.”
  • WWE officially announced yesterday that Steve Koonin, Connor Schell, and Nick Khan have been added to their board of directors.
  • Sonya Deville spoke to Variety about wanting to be a voice for the LGBTQ+ community: “I really just want to be a voice for the community in sports — specifically, in the WWE, I want to let people know that their sexuality doesn’t define them and how they identify doesn’t define them. And I’m a perfect example of it.”
  • Candice LeRae & Indi Hartwell, Michael Hayes, Bret Hart, Tyson Kidd, hip hop duo Tag Team, and Jake Atlas appeared on this morning’s episode of WWE’s The Bump.
  • Today is AJ Styles’ 44th birthday. Lex Luger also turns 63 today.
  • WWE’s YouTube channel uploaded John Cena & Jeff Hardy vs. JBL & Umaga from the May 26, 2008 episode of Raw, Roman Reigns vs. Kofi Kingston from the June 8, 2015 episode of Raw, and RVD vs. Randy Orton from the May 28, 2007 episode of Raw.

Other Wrestling

I’ve always wanted to be an executive; I’ve always wanted to get credit for the things I say, and my job depends on how well I do that. As a talent, it’s undeniable, you go in you have a good match, you have another good match and you have a string of matches people grow to know you like that. But in the world of being in the office, you know, you’ve got to have pelts on the wall. If you don’t have pelts on the wall people tend to go, ‘uh, well what’s he doing?’

Asking for credit is as you [Bully Ray] said looked dirty upon, it’s as dirty as asking a wrestler ‘Hey man, how much did they pay you?’ Because in our business everyone is trained and coerced to not talk about money because it’s just, like, the way it’s always been. I just felt like that’s a bad policy, I mean the best way to know your worth is to know what the standard is so you can make an even negotiation of what it is you’re doing for what you’re saying you’re going to do. I’m not saying everybody’s worth it, but you have to go by the open market, you have to go by market value.

My deal was up [with WWE]. This is not something that was recent, I go back to five months, six months. I wanted a position in the office, and I wanted everything that comes with it. I talked to Vince himself, he said, ‘write it up, you’re somebody I’ll hear from, I’ll listen from.’ I was told that there was a lot of cleaning house and there was a lot of cuts that were happening and there was a lot to come. I’ve seen hundreds of people in the company go and I still felt like knowing this I’m valuable enough that I wasn’t going anywhere. But when your deal comes up and the rights, you know, the legalities part of it, comes up to where are you going to go next and what you’re going to do. I always wanted to do more, I’m a busy body. If I’m not doing what I know I can do and especially if I think I can do it better than somebody else and I can’t get that opportunity then I have to start looking for that opportunity somewhere else, and I did.

  • Tom Hannifan (formerly known as Tom Phillips in WWE) will be appearing on the episode of Richard Deitsch’s Sports Media Podcast that’s being released overnight.
  • Jon Moxley will be guest hosting an upcoming episode of Renee Paquette’s Oral Sessions podcast: “Alright guys. Big ask here- my darling husband @JonMoxley is going to be guest hosting an episode of Oral Sessions while I figure out this whole mom thing. Let’s ask him for relationship/ life advice to answer on the show! Use #AskMox @TheVolumeSports”
  • Will Hobbs was the guest on the latest edition of Oral Sessions.
  • The Metro asked Moxley if WWE could still produce something like The Shield making a splash on Raw or SmackDown: “Anything could work. I mean, it’s different because you’re a known commodity on NXT now, whereas when we came in we were complete nobodies. So, there’s a benefit to that. On the one hand, nobody knows who you are, but on the other hand, you have a completely fresh slate, you’re a complete mystery. You can come right in and starting whooping whoever’s ass you want. The Shield might be the last big act that came from that old way of doing things before NXT really. You can do anything with anybody if you commit to them. The problem is — it doesn’t matter if they’re on NXT, if people know who they are or they don’t. If somebody’s getting over, you’re giving them the opportunity to get over, you’ve gotta actually follow through on pushing a guy or girl. It doesn’t really matter where they came from. That could definitely happen again, it’s just they gotta follow through with it all the way.”
  • Gia Miller has signed a new three-year deal with Impact Wrestling.
  • For Pride month, Dustin Rhodes has released a trans-inspired T-shirt design with all proceeds going to the National Center for Transgender Equality.
