Saturday News Update

WWE
- Renee Paquette was in Orlando yesterday filming future content for the A&E series WWE Rivals. She was part of a panel with Freddie Prinze Jr., Kevin Owens, Johnny Gargano, and JBL.
- After last night’s SmackDown, Drew McIntyre shared a photo of the damage that The Bloodline’s attack did to his back. McIntyre captioned the photo with “…I’m still breathing”
- A two-part hype video (one and two) on McIntyre’s WWE journey aired on SmackDown last night.
- In an Instagram post, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson reflected on this week marking the 20th anniversary of his match against Brock Lesnar at SummerSlam 2002:
- 20 years ago this week, we made history in New York and pro wrestling was never the same again
- The Rock vs Brock Lesnar WWE UNDISPUTED CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH
- I always had great chemistry with Brock as he was one of the greatest pure athletes I’ve ever danced with. We spent about 6 months wrestling around the world together, grooming Brock to become @WWE Heavyweight Champion. It culminated to this historic SUMMER SLAM PPV where the crowd was absolutely electric.
- Historic for two reasons:
- #1) In wrestling terms, I ‘did the honors’ of having Brock beat me right in the middle of the ring, 1-2-3. Brock is new champion. Brock is new face of WWE.
- #2) My contract was up in WWE and I quietly – and GRATEFULLY – retired as a full time pro wrestler after an incredible (and insanely short) 6 year career.
- It’s so wildly incomprehensible at times when I think back – that I only wrestled for 6 YEARS. How crazy is that irony? A 6 YEAR CAREER What a journey. #hardestworkerintheroom #gratefulman #peopleschamp
- * grace note *
- I did return to wrestling from 2011 to 2013 as it was my way of giving back to the business that was so good to me + I just f’n love wrestling
- PWInsider reported that – in addition to John Cena, Pat McAfee, and Brock Lesnar – The Undertaker attended Vince McMahon’s 77th birthday dinner earlier this week.
- Title belt maker Belts By Dan tweeted that it’s rumored WWE will be making numerous belt design changes: “Rumor mill says Triple H making numerous belt design changes.”
- Bayley, Dakota Kai, and IYO SKY appeared on WWE After the Bell this week.
- Kai spoke about being released from WWE this April and then getting the call to return ahead of SummerSlam:
- So like when it happened, I was sort of at peace with it. In those months away, I didn’t take any outside bookings or anything like that. I really wanted to take time for myself, reset, and just remind myself of the things that are important, and during that time, I was able to do that.
- So when that call came, like literally it was 24 hours before SummerSlam. It was weird how the timing worked out perfectly, like I hadn’t taken any booking or signed anything in stone. When that happened, it was like, oh my gosh. Was this meant to be? Then by the time SummerSlam sort of came, I was still in the stage of processing everything that was happening because that was a very small window to not only physically prepare, but mentally and emotionally as well. It’s a dream scenario to be alongside these two.
- Raquel Rodriguez & Aliyah, Kofi Kingston & Xavier Woods, and Ricochet were interviewed on The SmackDown LowDown this week.
- Theory appeared on The Ten Count for NBC Sports Boston.
- WWE has a Playlist video of Johnny Gargano’s best moments.
- WWE’s YouTube channel uploaded Kurt Angle vs. John Cena from No Mercy 2003, Bianca Belair vs. Liv Morgan vs. Carmella vs. Zelina Vega from the August 27, 2021 episode of SmackDown, and a Big E/Baron Corbin segment from that same SmackDown.
Other Wrestling
- Konosuke Takeshita has been announced for King of the Indies 2022, which is taking place in San Francisco on Saturday, November 19. Takeshita told Cultaholic earlier this month that he was hoping to return to the United States in October.
- Rob Van Dam vs. Dante Martin is set for F1RST Wrestling’s Saturday Night Nitro event at the Mall of America on September 10.
- The upcoming AEW Fight Forever video game won best sports/racing game at Gamescom 2022.
- Maki Itoh spoke to Wrestle Inn about her friendship with Excalibur: “Becoming friends with many wrestlers overseas. I’m bad at communication! But somehow, I’m able to communicate in English, and it’s enjoyable to speak with them! I’m really close with Excalibur; he’s kind of like a dad to me. When I lost my credit card and phone, he really helped me out when I needed it. (laughs)”
- Smart Mark Sterling was the guest on AEW Unrestricted this week.
