SATURDAY NEWS UPDATE

WWE

Cable listings indicate that it will be a WWE’s Top 10 Moments of 2021 special and will air from 8-10 p.m. Eastern time. There won’t be a new SmackDown on Fox next Friday. Fox originally was going to air its “New Year’s Eve Toast & Roast 2022” special, but that was canceled due to COVID-19 concerns following the emergence of the omicron variant.
  • Though it was reported earlier this month that they had broken up, Charlotte posted pictures of her with Andrade today and wished everyone a Merry Christmas from them.
  • Sami Zayn announced that his #SamiForSyria campaign will be operating two mobile clinics in 2022. Zayn is matching every dollar donated to the campaign today up to $20,000.
  • Bad Bunny tweeted that among his greatest achievements this year were his win at WrestleMania and helping Homer & Marge Simpson get back together in the music video for his “Te Deseo Lo Mejor” song.
  • Natalya issued an in-character statement after Guinness World Records recognized her for having more wins than any other woman in WWE history.

Other Wrestling

  • Tay Conti posted a statement about why she took a social media break recently. Conti had received abuse from fans who blamed her for Sammy Guevara and his former fiancee Pam ending their engagement. Conti’s statement is available below:

Hi Friends,

I had to take some time off social media because I was reading some unnecessary comments.

My personal life is no ones business and no one has the right to create false rumors and harras me for something that wasn’t my fault.

When I look at the mirror, I’m happy to see who I am and I’m proud of myself. If you like my career, great you can stay but if you don’t, just leave. One thing is for sure: HATERS WILL NOT TAKE MY HAPPINESS AWAY.

I’m living my best life and bringing happiness to the people that enjoy my work. For those who shared love, I can’t THANK YOU enough… know that I do appreciate and love y’all, I’ll keep going no matter what

Now let’s f*cking go bc I need to workout, period. – Tay Conti

I think everything’s entertainment. I think some people conflate being a fighter with being an entertainer, but when it makes dollars, it makes sense. And what the Paul brothers are doing, I think for the lack of a better term, it’s old school pro wrestling, right?

This is stuff – you could say they’re crossing over, but there’s so many similarities between the two businesses. They command attention. People want to see them get knocked out, they know this, but they’re putting themselves out there. They’re putting themselves on the line. I’ll never criticize in a negative way or fashion anybody who makes the walk, anybody who trains their ass off. Because I did it and I know what it takes. And you put yourself out there, you put yourself on the line.

A lot of the times – a lot of the sacrifice goes unnoticed. But it’s what it is. When [Floyd] Mayweather crossed over and did a match at WrestleMania, I’m sure we’re eventually going to see [Conor] McGregor come over… [Ronda] Rousey was excellent when she came over. The bottom line is making money. If you’re making money, you’re technically not really doing anything wrong.

  • Britt Baker responded to a fan pointing out that the crowd shot of her has been removed from NXT TakeOver WarGames 2019 on Peacock: “That’s okay. They took me out, I took their BAY BAY”
  • Today is Miro’s 36th birthday. AEW referee Paul Turner is also celebrating a birthday on Christmas Day.
  • Amanda Huber thanked everyone for the love and support they’ve given her this year: “Merry Christmas everyone. Genuinely, from the bottom of my heart, thank you to everyone for their constant love & support this past year. It’s been a roller coaster but I am so thankful & happy to be alive. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays from myself & these wild ones”
  • On this week’s episode of the AEW Unrestricted podcast, Tony Schiavone and Aubrey Edwards discussed their favorite AEW moments of 2021.
