SUNDAY NEWS UPDATE

We have two weekend shows. I did one show with Garrett Gonzales talking about the Hall of Fame, Jon Moxley, MLW lawsuit against WWE, ratings notes and more. The weekend show with Bryan Alvarez is also up talking about the Hall of Fame, and New Japan, Rampage, Smackdown, UFC and more.

Regarding searches on Google for the week, there were two items that came up in the top 20 this past week. John Cena was No. 16 on Tuesday for noting that he was probably not going to be at WrestleMania this year. UFC was No. 9 yesterday with 200,000 for coverage and interest in the company’s first show of the year.

The Toronto Star article on the battle for wrestling supremacy between Vince McMahon and Tony Khan that has gotten a lot of talk, mainly for a paragraph with a WWE comment knocking AEW.

We’re looking for reports from last night’s WWE show in Fargo, ND and tonight’s show in Sioux Falls, SD to dave@wrestlingobserver.com.

Results from Fargo last night: Damien Priest b The Miz to keep the U.S. title, Madcap Moss b Ricochet, Chad Gable b Riddle, Bobby Lashley b Kevin Owens in seconds, Becky Lynch kept the Raw women’s title over Bianca Belair, Doudrop an Liv Morgan, Finn Balor b Austin Theory, Omos b Montez Ford, Charlotte Flair kept the Smackdown women’s title in a three-way over Shayna Baszler and Naomi with Sonya Deville as referee, Kofi Kingston & Seth Rollins & Big E b Roman Reigns & Usos.

Baszler is expected to be a super huge babyface tonight in Sioux Falls unless WWE insists on her insulting her former hometown.

Whatever rumors are going around, these two things are not true:

  • There will be no AEW involvement at the Royal Rumble. Jon Moxley will not be at that show.
  • TJ Wilson is still working for WWE and stories of him quitting are inaccurate.

Not saying this will happen, but with Monday being the first NFL playoff game in history opposite Raw, in theory Raw should do one of its lowest numbers of all-time. Like with last week, if Dynamite beats Raw or Raw does a weak number by its standards, it really isn’t significant of anything past the power of an NFL playoff game. The first number to show what level Raw really is at will be the show on the 24th. To make things worse for WWE, Dwayne Johnson will be working with the Manning Brothers announcing the ESPN 2 version of Monday’s game. No matches have been announced thus far for Raw.

Katlyn Chookagian’s last fight of her UFC contract was last night’s win over Jennifer Maia. She wants to stay in the promotion but UFC had not offered her a new deal.
