Cody Rhodes may have already completed most of the goals that he famously listed in a tweet after leaving WWE, but his biggest accomplishment since wasn’t something that was mentioned then. Rhodes defeated Christopher Daniels to win the Ring of Honor World Championship in the main event of Best in the World last Friday night.

WEDNESDAY NEWS UPDATE

WWE

  • With Asuka vs. Nikki Cross in a last woman standing match for the NXT Women’s Championship airing tonight, Raw, SmackDown, and NXT will all have had women’s main events this week. That’s the first time that has ever happened.
  • Pro Wrestling Sheet reported that Tyson Kidd is being transitioned into an unspecified behind-the-scenes role in WWE.
  • Lisa Marie Varon (formerly known as Victoria) wrote on Facebook that she thought last night’s women’s Money in the Bank ladder match was incredible and that she wanted to go backstage and congratulate them, but WWE said that she couldn’t.
  • NXT’s Mary Kate (who was wrestling under that name since being signed by WWE and was formerly Andrea on the indies) has been given a new in-ring name. She will now be called Sage Miller.
  • Cathy Kelley is hosting a new “NXT Insider” video series.
  • Baron Corbin appeared on today’s episode of Talk is Jericho. Charlotte Flair will be this week’s guest on the Edge and Christian podcast.
  • Los Angeles Lakers president Jeanie Buss told TMZ Sports that LaVar Ball did a “terrific” job on Raw.
  • CM Punk posted a picture of a pipe bomb on his Instagram account yesterday, referencing that it was the sixth anniversary of his famous promo from Las Vegas before Money in the Bank 2011.
  • Raymond Rougeau and Jean Brassard will start as the French PPV commentary team at Great Balls of Fire. (thanks to Pat Laprade)
  • Organic Authority interviewed Austin Aries about his new book, which is largely about his vegan lifestyle.

Pro Wrestling

  • Former Tough Enough winner Matt Cappotelli announced that the brain tumor he had removed 10 years ago has come back much more aggressively and that a portion of it is inoperable. Cappotelli wrote that he’s undergoing surgery to remove a part of the tumor and that further treatment plans will be decided after doctors determine what they’re dealing with. Our best wishes to him and his family.
  • PWG has continued to reveal entrants for this year’s Battle of Los Angeles. Rey Fenix, Dezmond Xavier, and Donovan Dijak were announced for the tournament today. They join Flamita, Keith Lee, WALTER, and Travis Banks as the already announced participants.
  • Anthem Wrestling Exhibitions (the parent company of Impact Wrestling) officially revealed today that they’ve entered into an agreement to acquire Global Force Wrestling. Jeff Jarrett’s official title is that he’s Impact’s Chief Creative Officer.
  • On a conference call with the pro wrestling media today, Josh Barnett said that he would have liked to continue working with Impact after his program with Bobby Lashley but the fit didn’t seem to be there for the company.
  • New Japan World has uploaded the Christopher Daniels vs. Cody Rhodes ROH World Championship match from Best in the World. The Young Bucks’ tag title match against War Machine and Trent Barreta & Chuck Taylor is also available on the service.

UFC/MMA

  • MMA Fighting first reported that Cowboy Cerrone vs. Robbie Lawler is off of the UFC 213 card and will likely be rescheduled. The report said that it was due to Cerrone suffering a fairly minor injury, but Cerrone updated that the fight is being rescheduled because he had a bad infection in his blood. Despite it initially being indicated that Cerrone vs. Lawler was likely being moved to UFC 214 in Anaheim, California on July 29th, Dana White said that Cerrone won’t be back by then due to a staph infection and a pulled groin.
  • Cris Cyborg will now face Tonya Evinger for the women’s featherweight title at UFC 214 after Megan Anderson was forced to withdraw from the fight due to personal reasons. Tyron Woodley vs. Demian Maia for the welterweight title is also set for UFC 214. There will be three title fights on the show, with Daniel Cormier also set to defend his light heavyweight championship against Jon Jones.
  • White told MMA Junkie that Georges St-Pierre will face the winner of Woodley vs. Maia. Ariel Helwani tweeted that matchup is planned for UFC’s return to Madison Square Garden.
  • Renan Barao’s fight against Aljamain Sterling at UFC 214 will now be at a catchweight of 140 pounds due to the California State Athletic Commission not allowing Barao to cut to bantamweight because of past health issues trying to make it.
  • Junior dos Santos vs. Francis Ngannou will take place at UFC 215 on September 9th in Edmonton.
  • After the way that Kevin Lee vs. Michael Chiesa ended, Michael Bisping said that referees and judges need to be held accountable for their mistakes.
  • ESPN has an interview with Michelle Waterson from the annual “Body Issue” of their magazine.
