PRO WRESTLING

  • New Japan Pro Wrestling furthered the build to WrestleKingdom 11 at the Tokyo Dome on January 4th with angles shot at their Power Struggle pay-per-view last night. The semi-main event of the show appears to be set after Hiroshi Tanahashi confronted Tetsuya Naito after Naito had retained his IWGP Intercontinental Championship against Jay Lethal in the main event.
  • The junior heavyweight title match at the Dome also seems to be clear after NJPW’s time bomb was revealed to be Kamaitachi, going by his real name Hiromu Takahashi. He was brought out following KUSHIDA defeating BUSHI to win the title.
  • And in the finals of the junior heavyweight tag tournament, Roppongi Vice picked up the win over ACH and Taiji Ishimori and will likely be facing The Young Bucks at the Dome unless other teams are added to the match. The main event of WrestleKingdom 11 will be Kazuchika Okada defending the IWGP Heavyweight Championship against Kenny Omega.
  • Chris Hero appeared as “Brother Hero” teaming alongside Broken Matt Hardy at AAW last night. Hero did a swanton bomb during the match.
  • Ratings for TNA Impact held steady this week with 359k viewers watching the show. Last week’s episode did 362k viewers.

And why is he the greatest wrestler of all-time? The answers aren’t quite as obvious as you might guess. There’s also wrestling business analysis: The plight of the Cruiserweight division, the flawed NXT business model (thanks, Dave Meltzer, for the analogy) and…Roman Reigns at ROH’s Final Battle?? • Former TNA Star Garett Bischoff was the latest guest on the Pancakes and Powerslams Show. He had much to say about his stint at TNA, as well as their current state. Here are some highlights. What wrestling is lacking today: “What was special about wrestling back then that we lack today is the magic. With the internet and everybody has got a phone, Instagram, and Facebook, and social media, and Youtube, and everything else. It’s just the magic isn’t there like it used to be. It’s not as special as it used to be, from a viewer’s perspective.”
