WON NEWSLETTER: December 14, 2020 Observer Newsletter: Omega on Impact, NXT TakeOver: WarGames
A show filled with major hooks coming off Winter is Coming, including the first interview by Sting, the first interview by Kenny Omega & Don Callis since winning the AEW title and the debut of Shaquille O’Neal led to AEW increasing from last week with 995,000 viewers and an 0.45 rating in 18-49, putting it in second place on the cable charts for the night.
The show beat Winter is Coming, which had been promoted for weeks and the Jon Moxley vs. Omega match that was the company’s biggest television match to date. Granted, this week was the given with the three big segments plus the Inner Circle segment and a Young Bucks match. But Dynamite with competition was head-to-head with Raw numbers in women under 50 (Raw was ahead 229,000 to 220,000 in 18-49 women) and in 18-34 women tied Smackdown at 100,000, even though Smackdown has the huge advantage of being on network television. It beat Raw in women 18-34 but not with men 18-34.

SATURDAY NEWS UPDATE

WWE
- A new episode of Talking Smack will air live on FS1 at 10 p.m. Eastern time following next Friday’s SmackDown. Next week’s SmackDown is airing on FS1 due to college football’s Pac-12 Championship Game being on Fox. A new Talking Smack also aired after SmackDown when SmackDown made a one-week shift to FS1 in October due to the World Series. A replay of next week’s SmackDown will air on FS1 after Talking Smack at 11 p.m. Eastern.
- Big E appeared on this week’s Talking Smack with Kayla Braxton and Paul Heyman. Heyman said he respects Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods, but Big E needs to accept that The New Day will only be a footnote in the story of the greatness of Big E. Heyman then asked Big E a rhetorical question, asking him when the last time was that he saw Roman Reigns in the ring and anyone even bothered to mention The Shield.
- The role of Carmella’s associate/sommelier on last night’s SmackDown was played by WWE Performance Center wrestler Akeem Young (real name Sidney Bateman).
- Goldberg spoke to Bleacher Report about his in-ring future: “We always have to cross that bridge when we come to it. I’m 53 years old, I’ll be 54 here in a couple of weeks. Hey, as long as my body can still do it, I’m still going to do it. It’s very tough because being a power wrestler at this age, I’m not the person I was back in the past. You have that sense of, ‘Oh, am I ruining my legacy?’ Well, you know what? I still have to put food on the table for my family. There are a lot of things that come into consideration, and at the end of the day, I’m a businessman. I do what I got to do to stay afloat and stay out there. I don’t see myself hanging it up any time soon, but then again, I also don’t see myself wrestling until I’m 60.”
- Goldberg also told Bleacher Report about wrestlers he’d like to face: “If the Roman Reigns match isn’t the match at the top of my priority list, then I wouldn’t be Goldberg. That’s a match that needs to happen. It’s a match that’s needed to happen for a very long period of time. I wish I would’ve been able to have that match 10 years ago. People in hell want ice water, too. You can’t have everything the way you want it, but I think I can still be a very formidable opponent for him. Georgia will always be better than Georgia Tech at the end of the day, anyway. I’m a business guy, I’m a company guy, but I would be remiss in saying I didn’t want to tangle again with Randy Orton. Hands down, he’s one of the best in the business. His professionalism, his character development, his in-ring work, his promos, his everything. I’m a huge fan, I have been for a very long time. It’s been in his blood and family for God knows how long and he’s at the top of the food chain as far as I’m concerned. I’d love to tangle with Randy again. I’d love to get in the ring with Drew [McIntyre]. I’d love to get in the ring with [Keith] Lee. There’s a lot of people that are still attractive out there.”
- WWE announced a new multi-year agreement for their TV to continue airing on IB Sports in South Korea. In addition to Raw, SmackDown, and PPVs, NXT will now air on IB Sports as well.
- The Daily Star interviewed Pete Dunne.
- WWE’s YouTube channel uploaded Edge vs. Jeff Hardy in a ladder match for the World Heavyweight Championship from Extreme Rules 2009, Nikki Bella vs. AJ Lee for the Divas Championship from TLC 2014, and Rey Mysterio vs. Randy Orton in a chairs match from TLC 2018.
Other Wrestling
- PWInsider reported that Sami Callihan, whose contract expires at the end of the year, is expected to remain with Impact Wrestling.
- Don Callis appeared on Busted Open Radio this week and spoke about the success of lats week’s Impact episode with Kenny Omega: “Look, the team at Impact does a great job. Everyone from Ed Nordholm to Scott D’Amore, myself, guys like Tommy [Dreamer], D’Lo [Brown], many other people, people on the creative team do a great job and I think Scott and I have always said, ‘Slow and steady wins the race’ and we’ve tried to make those sorts of changes and tried to put on a product and you don’t hit on everything obviously, but it’s a process and I think that I’ve been excited about Impact Wrestling for a long time and I think you’re right. I think the people, once they find it, they realize this is a great show. In terms of the trending and the accolades and the metrics around Tuesday night which are huge, I guess I would say the same thing to fans of AEW, you’re welcome.”
- Dave Meltzer noted that the viewership high point for this past Wednesday’s Dynamite was 1,220,000 viewers for the segment with Shaquille O’Neal and Brandi Rhodes.
- On Talk is Jericho earlier this week, Chris Jericho and Meltzer discussed the legacy of Pat Patterson.
