FRIDAY NEWS UPDATE

— As far as shows go, it’s a quiet weekend with the biggest event being New Japan’s Tokyo Dome show which starts at 4 AM Eastern on Sunday. There is still no official word on the main event and the condition of Kota Ibushi who suffering from aspiration pneumonia and is scheduled to headline going for the IWGP world title against Shingo Takagi.

This is the only show we’ll be doing a weekend poll on, so you can send your thumbs up, down or middle along with a best and worst match to dave@wrestlingobserver.com

We are also looking for reports this weekend from the WWE house shows on Saturday in Pittsburgh and Sunday in Louisville.  On both shows: John Cena, Roman Reigns, Bobby Lashley, Bianca Belair, Drew McIntyre, the Mysterios and A.J. Styles.

— The current issue of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter goes in-depth into the Daniel Bryan story and the key factors involved in the decision-making process.

— WWE SmackDown on Fox has SmackDown Women’s Champion Bianca Belair vs. Carmella for the title; Apollo Crews vs. Big E as part of their best-of-27 series, a John Cena-Roman Reigns confrontation and the brand debut for Toni Storm. The last word was that Storm is to be a babyface and not a heel like in NXT.

— UFC on ESPN tomorrow starting at 4 PM Eastern from Las Vegas’ Apex:

Aspen Ladd vs. Macy Chiasson, the scheduled co-main event, was pulled Thursday with the report being Chiasson was injured and forced to pull out.

The main event is a significant fight that could determine a future bantamweight title challenger, but overall, this is an weak show. It’ll be interesting how it does between the Olympics as competition and not having last week’s star power with Miesha Tate.

— If there was any question whether John Cena moves tickets for WWE, the sales for most of the shows he was announced for had major increases since the announcement of the “Summer of Cena.” Kansas City was the biggest mover, selling nearly 1700 tickets this past week. The only market the announcement didn’t seem to mean much for was Minneapolis, but there were marked increases everywhere else. (thanks to William Zdon)

— Arena Mexico Friday has the second block of the Leyenda de Plata tournament, an eight-man single elimination tournament that will involve Negro Casas, Caristico, Titan, Virus, Rey Cometa, Polvora, Fugaz and Felino Jr.

WWE

— Mattel reports that the 2021 San Diego Comic Con exclusive Sgt. Slaughter figure went on sale at 9 AM Thursday and sold out in three minutes. They said it’s the third year in a row that their exclusive sold out its presale online in less than 15 minutes.

— Harry Smith & Austin Theory have had two dark matches as a tag team of late. Smith signed with WWE back in April, but didn’t debut until last week.

AEW

— All of Arthur Ashe Stadium for the 9/22 Dynamite show has been opened up with a capacity of 18,692.  They were at 16,403 as of this morning.

— Regarding Rampage in international markets, they are working on deals in Canada, Brazil, South America, India, Germany, Italy, France and Africa with no deals finalized as of now. For the UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand, it looks like it will be part of the AEW+ service.

— TNT is airing NHL doubleheaders on Wednesdays on 10/13 and 10/20. There is no word on the plan for AEW Dynamite airing those two weeks.

UFC

— Joaquin Buckley vs. Antonio Arroyo has been added to the 9/18 show.

OTHER NOTES

— MLW Battle Riot airs Saturday on BeIn Sports at 10 PM and YouTube.

— GCW Champion Nick Gage vs. Matt Cardona for the title takes place from Atlantic City, NJ, on Saturday at 8 p.m. on FITE. Alex Colon vs. Drew Parker (coming off the Big Japan tournament win) takes place in a Ultraviolent championship match, and Tag Team Champions Jimmy Lloyd & G-Raver defend against Mance Warner & Matthew Justice. Marko Stunt, 2 Cold Scorpio and Tony Deppen are also on the show.

— ROH Death Before Dishonor tickets for 9/12 in Lakeland, FL, are now on sale, priced at $50 and $30.

— Defy put tickets on sale today for its 8/27 and 8/28 shows in Seattle, its first shows back since the pandemic. Regular seats for both nights sold out in five minutes and standing room sold out in 45 minutes. The first night has Artemis Spencer vs. Josh Alexander and Schaff vs. Lance Archer.

— Logan Paul opened as a -200 favorite in a proposed boxing match with Anderson Silva. At that point, everyone bet on Silva to the point the oddsmakers have flipped the odds and how Silva is a -240 favorite,

— Here’s a story on Dean Muhtadi, the former Mojo Rawley in WWE, making hs acting debut in G.I. Joe: Origins.

— IWF Legends runs on 8/21 and 8/22 in Nutley, NJ, at the Rec Center.

— Bec Rawlings, who had been with Bellator, has signed to return to Bare Knuckle Fighting Championships who has a PPV tonight headlined by Paige VanZant vs. Rachael Ostovich.

— CWE runs tonight in Regina, Saskatchewan at The Exchange.

— AIW Wrestlerager 5 on 8/28 in Parma, OH, will feature Matthew Justice and special guest Bill Alfonso.

–MCW runs tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. at the MCW Arena in Joppa,MD with Shane Taylor Promotions (Taylor & Kuan & Moses) defending the ROH six-man titles against Black Wall Street. Sam Adonis vs. King McBride vs. Kekoa vs. Brandon Scott and Ray Lyn vs. Amy Rose are also on the show.

— 559 Fights returns to Valley Strong Ballpark in Visalia, CA with a show on 8/14 at 7 p.m.
