SATURDAY NEWS UPDATE

WWE

  • Adam Pearce announced on last night’s SmackDown that, in addition to being suspended indefinitely, Brock Lesnar has been fined one million dollars in storyline after he attacked officials and broke equipment while beating down Roman Reigns on the previous week’s show. Lesnar also gave Pearce two F5s after Pearce announced his suspension.
  • Reigns didn’t appear on television on last night’s SmackDown, but he teamed with The Usos in a dark match after the show went off the air. Drew McIntyre & The Street Profits defeated Reigns & The Usos.
  • An apparent heel turn took place on SmackDown as Shotzi attacked Sasha Banks after losing a non-title match against SmackDown Women’s Champion Charlotte Flair. Banks accidentally distracted Shotzi, leading to Charlotte hitting Natural Selection on Shotzi to get the win. On Talking Smack, Shotzi explained why she attacked Banks: “I am fed up, plain and simple! I am done being the happy and easy-going Shotzi. I have been screwed over on title opportunities over title opportunities. My tag partner [Tegan Nox] left me. I came here wanting to have fun and kick ass. Well, you know what, I haven’t had fun in a really long time. So, there’s just one thing left to do. Sasha [Banks] was my breaking point. And now, she’s my target. I’m not letting anyone walk over me anymore. I am running over everyone in my way!”
  • JohnWallStreet of Sportico reported that WWE’s new trading card deal with Panini is a “low eight-figure pact” that is “worth more than three times the average annual value of WWE’s expiring agreement with Topps.”
  • Today is Edge’s 48th birthday. He thanked everyone for the outpouring of love and birthday wishes he’s received: “The look on my face when Beth reminded me how old I am today. But seriously thank you for the outpouring of love and birthday wishes. It will never get old and always be appreciated. I’m gonna go eat donuts now.”
  • Big E appeared on The Breakfast Club on Power 105.1 in New York City.
  • Gable Steveson was the guest on this week’s episode of the WWE After the Bell podcast.
  • WWE’s YouTube channel uploaded Jeff Hardy vs. Carlito for the Intercontinental title from Cyber Sunday 2006, John Cena vs. Randy Orton from the November 14, 2005 episode of Raw, and Rey Mysterio & Jeff Hardy vs. Randy Orton & The Miz from the October 30, 2018 episode of SmackDown.

Other Wrestling

  • Jim Duggan’s wife Debra posted an update yesterday after Duggan underwent prostate cancer surgery: “Jim’s surgery went as planned. Thank you for your prayers, good vibes and well wishes. Please continue them as he continues to heal.” Duggan announced this week that he had been diagnosed with prostate cancer, noting that it’s a situation that’s been going on for a couple of months.
  • It appears that Eddie Kingston will be CM Punk’s next feud in AEW. After Kingston lost to Bryan Danielson in the World title eliminator tournament semifinals on last night’s Rampage, Kingston and Punk got into a confrontation backstage while Punk was being interviewed by Tony Schiavone.’
  • While appearing on Bell to Belles, Mercedes Martinez said that, after her appearance at All Out 2019, she was in talks with AEW but didn’t receive a contract offer before signing with WWE:

There was no contract offer. Yes, I mean, if you want to straight shoot, we can straight shoot. People think there was [a contract offer], but there wasn’t. We were in talks, you know? I just think that WWE, when they gave me the contract, they let me still do AEW. They offered the contract after I was revealed as the joker. Yeah, as soon as I did [All Out], it was maybe two weeks afterwards that WWE contacted me. I was in a position where I was like, ‘I’m just not sure yet. I have AEW Dark to do,’ and they said, ‘That’s fine. You can go ahead and do it and then let us know. The offer is there but it won’t last very long, so I’m like, ‘Okay, just let me figure out some things.’ I had my son, and at that time, there were just a lot of things going on personally. I just wanted to make sure everything was intact.

But, you know, I talked to Cody, and talked to Brandi, and it was more or less, ‘When you guys are ready for me, I’m here but I won’t be there for long.’ I believe Awesome Kong was, at that time, helping with talent. We talked and I told her, ‘WWE is knocking at my door, so if there is an offer to be made, it has to be done now because if this is the only offer on the table, with me being close to 40, I need to take something because my legacy has to end at some point. And after that, there was nothing, so I took the contract with WWE, negotiated with what we needed to do, and I was very happy with what they offered.

I mean, it’s, it’s surprising. It’s not something that if you were paying attention that you didn’t foresee maybe being an option or being a potential thing. So it’s not very, it’s not shocking. It’s disappointing. Because you know, just cause of how hard the talent has been working. For the last 18 months or so, there’s been no roster that’s consistently put on the performances that we have. And what’s really disappointing is I felt like we were kind of turning a corner. It’s just one of those things where you’ve made this big comeback in the game, you just didn’t have enough time. I mean, and that’s the feeling that I get all the time, time just ran out, you know what I mean? And for the hole that we were put in, and the continuous things that kept continuing to trip us up. The talent has been absolutely incredible. So I tip my hat to every man and woman there who have been busting their ass and you know, spending time away from their families and putting their bodies to hell. For Ring of Honor, and for what we have, and the passion that we had for that place. So we’ve got this taping coming up this week. And then we’ve got Final Battle. And I’m sure everybody’s gonna go out there and absolutely leave it all on the line one last time.
