With WWE having an annual pay-per-view built around multiple Hell in a Cell matches, it’s only natural that they mostly just become standard matches that are surrounded by a roofed cage. But that wasn’t the case at this year’s PPV. Sunday night’s show was bookended by two great Hell in a Cell matches where the structure was essential in telling the story that was going on in the ring.

WON BACK ISSUE: September 18, 2000 Wrestling Observer Newsletter: Raw/Nitro ratings war, NJPW vs. AJPW, more

In what was the most significant, and closest Monday night ratings race so far this year, a heavily criticized edition of Nitro on 9/11 scored the highest rating for the show in its regular opposed format since 1/10 and the closest margin between the two shows since 12/20. Nitro finished with a 3.20 rating (3.47 first hour; 2.93 second hour) and a 4.8 share. Raw did a 5.90 rating (5.36 first hour; 6.38 second hour) and an 8.9 share.

Frank Shamrock and Kazushi Sakuraba went to a ten minute draw in their grappling match today on the Rizin show in Fukuoka, Japan. The card itself lasted eight hours.

Michael Elgin won AAW’s second annual Jim Lyman Memorial tournament in Berwyn, IL: Last night’s results saw: Zema Ion b ACH in 6:42, Michael Elgin b Myron Reed in 11:28, Jeff Cobb b AR Fox in 11:28, Sami Callihan b Mark Haskins in 13:58, Teddy Hart won four-way over Steven Wolf, Andrew Everett and Brian Cage in 9:54 in an insane match, Elgin b Ion in 10:52, Cobb b Callihan in :33, Davey Vega & Mat Fitchett won three-way over Paco & Eddie Kingston and Connor Braxton & Curt Stallion, Rey Fenix & Penta 0M b Zachary Wentz & Dezmond Xavier in 16:02 (champions losing in a non-title match), Elgin b Cobb in 20 to win the tournament. I was told both the Friday and Saturday night shows were outstanding and the Friday show is available for $6.99.

In a slow MMA weekend in the U.S., perhaps the biggest actual name fighting was MacKenzie Dern on AXS who won herfight.

  • Mickie James was inducted into the Native American Music Hall of Fame over the weekend. 
  • Dwayne Johnson promoting the 2K18 video game.
  • The company announced the signings of woman wrestlers Kavita Devi from India and Shadia Bseiso from Jordan. Devi was in the Mae Young Classic. She was actually signed some time back and is scheduled to not be in the country until January.
  • Lilian Garcia sang the national anthem at today’s New York Jets vs. New England Patriots game.
  • An interview with Wolfgang.

UFC

  • GSP/Michael Bisping & Dana White dropped the puck in a pre-game ceremony at last night’s Montreal Canadians vs. Toronto Maple Leafs game at the Bell Centre.
