Daily Update: ROH Field of Honor, Miz vs. D. Bryan, Balor injury, McMahon’s B-Day

ROH: Field of Honor Preview

This Saturday, Aug. 27th, from the MCU Park (1904 Surf Ave.) in Brooklyn, NY starting at 6pm, Ring of Honor takes the diamond for the third consecutive Field of Honor!

ROH WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP – FOUR CORNER SURVIVAL: Adam Cole (c) vs Jay Lethal vs Tetsuya Naito vs Hiroshi Tanahashi

  • ROH’s newest Champion Adam Cole BAYBAY will defend his title against three other men. Jay Lethal, who had his 427day reign, the fourth longest in ROH history, ended by Cole, will be looking to strike Cole out to regain his belt. Meanwhile, IWGP Heavyweight Champions Naito and Tanahashi will each be vying to become just the second Japanese wrestler to win the ROH World Title (Takeshi Morishima held the championship for eight months in 2007).

ROH World Tag Team Championship – Gauntlet Match: The Addiction (“Almighty” Christopher Daniels and Frankie Kazarian) defend the titles against the winners of a 5-team Gauntlet Match

  • The gauntles will feature the Briscoes, War Machine, All Night Express, Toru Yano and Gedo, and Cheeseburger and Will Ferrara. The Briscoes are eight time ROH World Tag Team champions, but War Machine and ANX are former champs as well. Yano and Gedo compete for the NJPW faction “CHAOS” while Cheeseburger and Ferrara are products of the ROH Dojo.

IWGP Intercontinental Championship: “Unbreakable” Michael Elgin (c) vs Donovan Dijak

  • This is the first time the IWGP Intercontinental Championship has been defended in the U.S. Elgin became champion in June in the firstever Ladder Match in NJPW history, capturing the title from Kenny “The Cleaner” Omega. Dijak won the 2015 Top Prospect Tournament and is one of the fastest rising stars in wrestling.

Special Challenge Match: Kyle O’Reilly vs Katsuyori Shibata

  • Cole’s former best friend and tag team partner Kyle O’Reilly was the first man to “congratulate” Cole on his win, by laying out the new champ. O’Reilly has his sights sets on winning the world title, but first he must shut out Katsuyori Shibata. This marks the first ever singles match between these two incredible performers. Shibata made his US debut last weekend at “Death Before Dishonor” while Kyle is coming back from a shoulder injury. Shibata is the current NEVER Openweight Champion but the title is not on the line.

ROH World Television Championship: Bobby Fish (c) vs EVIL

  • Fish successfully defended the title twice last weekend, beating Mark Briscoe and Katsuyori Shibata but now faces one of the most improved members of the NJPW roster. Last year at “Field of Honor” Takaaki Watanabe earned a World TV title shot by winning the “Golden Gauntlet” but returned to NJPW in October, joining “Los Ingobernables de Japon” as the “King of Darkness” EVIL.

8 MAN SHOWDOWN: Bullett Club (Young Bucks, Yujiro Takahashi, and Hangman Page) vs Motor City Machine Guns, Lio Rush, and ACH.

  • “Bullet Club” looks to continue their global domination in Brooklyn. The Young Bucks successfully defended their IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Championship against the Motor City Machine Guns last Saturday at the finals of NJPW’s Super J Cup event but the Guns’ Chris Sabin looks to get even with Hangman Page as well for hanging him in May when Page joined “BulletClub”.

KUSHIDA vs Dalton Castle

  • These two have met before and this rematch promises to be very competitive. KUSHIDA won the Super JCup last Saturday while Castle took Kazuchika Okada to the limit at “Death Before Dishonor”. Both men are extremely popular with fans around the world and both are accomplished mat wrestlers.

The big event is UFC 202 on 8/20 at the T Mobile Arena, featuring a rematch of the biggest money fight in company history–Conor McGregor vs. Nate Diaz. Goldberg remembers his feud with The Rock, talks Conor McGregor and WWE2K17

  • On being in WWE2K17: “On October 11th, you’ll get to see me and Brock lesnar go at it one more time and I’m sure he’ll be trying to get that loss back from WrestleMania XX. the reality is when this game comes out, you’ll get to see me in the ring against new guys or guys like The Undertaker who you never saw me get in the ring with. As a father, a 49 year old, an old timer, it’s an honour to be in the game. It also makes me a great dad since it’s pretty cool for a ten year old”
  • Would he step back in the ring? “I do muay thai five days a week and wrestling pales in comparison to getting kicked in the face and thrown around like that five days a week. I’m a little lighter than I used to be but trust me, I can still bring the pain….Brock”
  • Does he have fond memories of his match with The Rock back in 2003? “Yeah definitely. I wish he would’ve let me do a bit more physical stuff or let me do a bit more to him but at the end of the day, you gotta keep your face pretty if you’re gonna be the Hollywood guy so I completely understand that but looking back on it, the fact that they would put me in the ring with him, first, that’s a huge honor so if I look back at some of the things I did back then, I sit in awe that I was in that position and they let it happen.”
  • Views on Conor McGregor’s comments on pro wrestlers in WWE. “First and foremost he’s trying to get some publicity. All I can say is, when I was in the business back in the day, if he had said that, there were a number of guys leaving him in a pool of blood because some of the guys that I tangled with, guys who taught me what I know, are not guys to mess around with and I personally believe there’s some guys around now who could do it but they’ve just chosen professional wrestling to be their endeavour. Just because they’re not doing it, doesn’t mean they couldn’t be good at it.”
