WON NEWSLETTER: December 28, 2020 Observer Newsletter: WWE TLC review, Tokyo Dome preview, more
WWE’s last PPV show of the year, TLC, was a unique show, great on performance, good on drama, and weird on ending.
It’s funny because the two key matches, Drew McIntyre vs. A.J. Styles for the WWE title and Roman Reigns vs. Kevin Owens for the Universal title had great individual performances, and the latter from a dramatic standpoint was among the WWE’s best matches of the year.
But it’s funny, because it’s also everything that was bad about New Japan pro wrestling with the same story in two different matches. There was no subtlety with the interference. McIntyre essentially had three opponents, Styles, The Miz and John Morrison with a 7-foot-3 giant at ringside who ended up helping him at one point by going after Miz & Morrison. But he overcame all that at the end.

WWE
- WWE sent its condolences to Jon Huber’s (Brodie Lee in AEW and Luke Harper in WWE) family, friends, and fans following his passing:
“WWE is saddened to learn that Jon Huber, known to WWE fans as Luke Harper, passed away today at age 41. Known as both Luke Harper and Brodie Lee in the ring, Huber found success in every stop of his sports-entertainment career, as his soft spoken yet imposing presence helped him create countless awe-inspiring moments in the ring. After a highly decorated run on the independent circuit, Harper debuted in NXT as a menacing enforcer for The Wyatt Family. Harper had a dominant tag team run with Rowan that would lay the groundwork for future championship success. As a member of The Wyatt Family, he engaged in heated rivalries with the likes of Kane, Daniel Bryan, The Shield, John Cena and The Usos. After being set free from the family, Harper authored an impressive singles run that culminated with him defeating Dolph Ziggler for the Intercontinental Championship. Harper & Rowan later comprised The Bludgeon Brothers and embarked on a path of destruction that was highlighted by a SmackDown Tag Team Title victory in a Triple Threat Match at WrestleMania 34. WWE extends its condolences to Huber’s family, friends and fans.” - Stephanie McMahon paid tribute to Huber: “I’m so deeply sorry for the loss of Jon Huber. We bonded over the love of our children. He was a true family man. #RIPBrodieLee”
- Windham Rotunda (Bray Wyatt) posted on Instagram:
“You were my best friend. My brother, my partner, my Terry Gordy. We changed this whole game because we refused to do it any way but OUR way. We were always at our best when we were a team I think we both knew it. We fought like brothers because we were. I’m so goddamn pissed. This isn’t how it was supposed to be, it was supposed to be us fat, bald and useless running Wyatt Family spots in high school gyms in our 70’s. Where do we go now? What do I do knowing I’ll never hear your condescending sarcasm as I am riding high. I miss you so fucking much already. I would do anything just live through our worst moments again I can’t believe you’re gone. I’m so sorry brother. I’m so sorry. You will always be a part of me, whether I like it or not without you everything is different and I hope Amanda truly knows that I am here not just to say it but because I love them too. I will make sure your son knows the incredible man you were. Not the legends people will tell but the real you that very few people got to see. I promise I’ll put him over clean in dark matches when he’s old enough just like I promised. I’m hurting so bad. I wish I had a chance to say goodbye. But then again, it’s Saturday and you know what that means…. save me a seat next to you wherever you are, that’s where I belong. I’ll be there when it’s my time. Goodbye forever Brodie. I love you – Windham” - Paul “Triple H” Levesque wrote about Huber: “Amazing talent ….Better human being, husband and father.”
- WWE also shared some of the other tributes members of their roster wrote about Huber.
- For Monday’s Raw, WWE released a commercial questioning what Alexa Bliss will have in store for Randy Orton on the episode.
- After declaring for the 2021 Royal Rumble, Daniel Bryan was one of the guests on this week’s Talking Smack with Kayla Braxton and Paul Heyman. Bryan spoke about being a better fighter and wrestler than Roman Reigns: “And Paul, I don’t lay claim to being better than many people at certain things. But I’ll tell you this: I am a better fighter than Roman Reigns. And I’m sure as hell a better wrestler than Roman Reigns. And if I win the Royal Rumble and face Roman Reigns at WrestleMania, and he’s still the champion, I will beat him for that championship. Here’s another thing: If he’s not champion — somewhere down the line — I’m going to beat him down, anyway.”
- While discussing declaring for the Royal Rumble, Bryan said on Talking Smack that he’s never won a battle royal in his career.
- While appearing on Post Wrestling’s Christmas Show, Trish Stratus discussed having unfinished business with Sasha Banks: “I mean, I think Sasha Banks and I might have some unfinished business and I say this with much love and respect. It’s like this moment we had at the Royal Rumble so many years ago; it seems like so many years ago now. It’s just like, people have held onto that moment and I watch it back. It’s undeniable [that] there’s definitely this intangible… this energy between us that — it’s a rare thing sometimes that two superstars get in there and you’re like, ‘Ooouuu, I like this,’ and you know, so I respect her so much as a worker, as a person, as a friend and so yeah, I think as a fan and personally, I think that would be an interesting thing to pursue, possibly at some point. Maybe possibly down the line at some point.”
- WWE’s YouTube channel uploaded Roman Reigns & Dolph Ziggler vs. Big Show & Seth Rollins from the December 26, 2014 episode of SmackDown, Natalya vs. Michelle McCool vs. Layla vs. Eve for the Divas Championship from Royal Rumble 2011, and The Miz vs. MVP for the United States Championship from Royal Rumble 2010.

You were such a great man. It’s been my pleasure and privilege to know and work with you. Your family is our family now. We will watch over them. Rest now friend.”
- The Young Bucks tweeted: “We love you Brodie.”
- ROH sent its condolences to Huber’s family, friends, and fans: “Ring of Honor is saddened to learn that Brodie Lee has died. He was 41. Standing 6-foot-5 and weighing 275 pounds, Lee was one of the most agile big men of his era. He worked for various promotions during his 17-year career, including ROH, WWE and AEW. During his time in ROH (2008-2009), Lee was a member of The Age of the Fall and engaged in a feud with Necro Butcher. ROH extends its deepest condolences to Lee’s family, friends and fans.”
- Impact Wrestling also sent its condolences to those who knew Huber: “We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Brodie Lee. We offer our sincerest condolences to his friends and family.”
- The Toronto Maple Leafs, Huber’s favorite hockey team, tweeted: “Our condolences are with Jon’s family”
- The Democrat & Chronicle in Huber’s hometown of Rochester covered his passing.
- Game Changer Wrestling has requested to be released from its contract with IndependentWrestling.TV: “Game Changer Wrestling is formally requesting to be released from our IWTV contract. This request comes with sadness and regret, but also with the knowledge that there is apparently no other option. Thank you everyone for your support. #FreeGCW”
- GCW owner Brett Lauderdale posted a Twitter thread about the release request, noting that “In this new world, our existing agreement w/ IWTV isn’t sustainable & we need a change. We have tried to seek a resolution privately but we’re not having much luck. IWTV will thrive with or without GCW. We just want the opportunity to do the same.”
- After WWE filed a trademark for the term, GCW has applied to trademark “The Collective.”
- Darby Allin spoke to Forbes about being part of Sting’s AEW debut: “The whole time I was sitting in the rafters, I didn’t know I was alluding to anything. There’s nothing as big as having ‘The Ball’ to me than having someone of Sting’s caliber come in and you’re in charge of helping to write that story of his debut. It doesn’t get any bigger than that. I take that very, very seriously so I was like ‘it’s business time.’ I’ve gotten some advice from [Sting]. He’s seen some of the videos I’ve done, and he’s a big admirer of those. He can be in the game for however long he’s been in the game and constantly keep people intrigued. So if you could pick his brain on that, that would be the No. 1 thing. Because he’s in a league of his own with that mystery and everything he controls. He controls the audience. When he walked out there and I’m just laying in that ring, and the music starts, I haven’t had a feeling like that in wrestling as long as I’ve been doing it…there’s nothing that topped that. That was like an out of body experience.”
